Librarian
- Developed a library website allowing students to search the library catalog and place books on hold. I would then check the books out and place them in a locker dropbox with a code emailed to the student, allowing them to pick up the book outside the library while the school was closed during Covid. Also created forms for students to fill out interests if they were unsure of what to read, and I would check out recommendations based on those interests. This allowed for reader advisory, when no interaction was allowed.- Instituted a read aloud program school-wide which increased book checkout 60% and student visits 80% from previous year.- Applied for and obtained a grant from the PTA to purchase over 100 audiobooks.- Mentored a team of students who placed third in the district “Battle of the Books”competition.
Librarian
- Supported a diverse middle school, representing 75 different languages where 65% of the students didn’t speak English at home.- Introduced a program to increase student engagement with the library by shifting the school’s model of library interaction from scheduled class attendance to unscheduled student drop-in. This required engagement and buy-in from educator stakeholders and the Principal. By removing scheduled library visits, the new model of engagement returned two class periods a month to the teachers and allowed students broader access to the library. This program increased student/librarian engagement by 155% in the first year.- Developed a reading program that used pets to engage Special Education students and English Language Learners. Combined with the library drop-in program the student/librarian engagement grew an additional 130% in the second year.- Developed an internet presence for the library pets (@glasgowguineas on instagram), allowing the library pets to further encourage and interact with students. The program received regionalnewscoverageandguestappearancesonlocalradiostations, andaspecial session at the state library conference on how to engage students by adding pets to the library.- Identified issues with teacher workload that prevented them from covering all Standards of Learning requirements. Librarian
- Operated the library in an impoverished Appalachian school of 1000 students in grades 5-12. Prior to joining the school, the library was unstaffed and locked most days. Worked with teachers and Principal during the first year to refocus the library from a room to store books into a learning center.- Identified issues with the library where the average copyright date of the collection was 1965. Given the extremely limited budget, negotiated with the superintendent and grade school librarian to allocate an additional 50% budget increase to restock the library. Instituted a book fair to raise additional funds for the library. Sold off excess collection at town events. Efforts resulted in the shift of the average copyright date of the collection from 1965 to 2007.- Increased the monthly library drop-in attendance at the start of the 2nd year to over 1000 visits, approximately the school population.- Created the “Ravenous Readers” book club, with a goal of completing a book every two weeks. To cover the cost of books, worked with the local Rotary Club to purchase 12 e-readers. In 2011, the school did not have internet access and the use of e-readers created additional technology draw to the book club. By 2014, the e-readers held over 100 books and there was a waiting list to join the book club. Four of the original “Ravenous Readers” have gone on to receive college educations and are currently members of the Young@Heart book club.
