A diverse position involving a mixture of office-based work and fieldwork across the UK. My duties were to conduct surveys for a range of protected species including badgers, bats, birds, great crested newts and water voles in-line with Natural England guidelines. Also assisted in habitat assessments including phase 1 habitat surveys. Took responsibility for data recording and survey planning. Undertook data searches, risk assessments, species appendixes, bat analysis and supported the production of technical reports. Assisted in robust protected species surveys for infrastructure projects maintaining confidentiality and keeping to strict working restrictions. Prioritised workloads ensuring deadlines were met while maintaining a healthy work-life balance during the busy survey season. Applied strong team working and collaboration skills working closely with team members in the field and the office setting. Other duties included liaising with clients and landowners, attending business development events and other tasks to aid senior members of the team.

I organised driving routes, scheduling which order to visit and asses a specific list of bins before local collection times. In this role teamwork has been essential in order to achieve targets and keep to a tight schedule. Towards the end of this project, there was a large amount of data entry. At this time, I was put in charge of organising and collating data from members of the team.

In this role I undertook bat surveys on a casual basis. These surveys include emergence surveys, transects and positioning static bat detectors. This work has helped to develop on my previous experience of working with bats in a professional environment.

During this eight-week placement, I carried out a project on cleaner client fish interactions. I watched video footage taken in Tobago and made behavioural observations. I gained experience working in a research team and presented a poster to academics and other students.

During the placement I developed species identification skills gaining experience surveying a variety of flora and fauna including; birds, plants, small mammals, bats, newts, butterflies and moths. As a student warden I gave daily swan talks and helped with general reserve and cattle management. The placement also gave me the opportunity to assist in the development of a reed-bed management plan and my personal project developed a bat management plan. Project Title: “Survey Approaches and Management for Bat Species at WWT Martin Mere”. The project required learning survey techniques such as bat identification, mapping, and echolocation analysis.

In this role I was responsible for assisting young people with specific learning difficulties in lessons and through one to one sessions. I also assisted the onsite matrons, having responsibilities such as driving pupils to sports lessons, entertaining and engaging with students during the weekends and was responsible for making sure students went to bed on time.
