About Andrew Stewart Iv
Hello everyone, welcome to my profile. From a young age I always loved to tinker, my favorite childhood toy was a workbench with an assortment of tools. Now in my late 20’s nothing has changed. My hobbies include working on my truck which I have rebuilt the engine in, a part time carpentry business AC4 Custom Creations building mostly household furniture, and fishing any chance I can get out into nature and appreciate my surroundings. I am interested in expanding my skills to include in automotive manufacturing and design, green power production, and automotive restoration. With approximately 3 years’ experience at Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), I’ve had the opportunity to work in multiple departments. Nuclear fuels, Production engineering and technical services, fuels, and special projects. While at Fort Calhoun Station I generated technical documents that fulfill nuclear regulatory compliance guidelines, preparing engineering analysis that corrected vendor errors and calculation reports with mentorship from senior team members. While working at the other locations I performed system component testing with FLIR videography, acoustic testing equipment, and ultrasonic thickness testers. I was able to work with a team of interns both assisting and leading in different projects. We generated plant component health reports, and maintenance schedules. I lead a team in conducting a feasibility test for new coal technology, and document design change recommendations to correct turbulent pipe flow conditions for a fuel oil plant. I am a senior at the University of North Texas. I’ve taken the majority of higher level mechanical engineering courses including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanics of materials, and machine design. My Graduation date is in 2022. During this internship I learned a great deal about project management and the different intricacies that are required to manage a successful project. Scheduling, budget, personnel, also gained knowledge of how to deal with unforeseen setback and how then impact your project. Weather, failed equipment, poor work quality from contracted operators, mid construction design and implementation changes and etc. My contributions were tracking drawing reviews and comments and submitting them to HDR for their review and feedback. I research both Refined Coal, and Coal Gasification putting my findings in a high level report including interesting facts and a feasibility analysis of each. I created payment tracking spread sheets. The primary goal is to identify contractor costs when ash land fill compaction or density tests were failed; the contractor pays for all associated costs of failed tests including his time, and all associated personnel using a pass fail percentage the spread sheet will calculate and break down a total amount due as well as cost per individual. I accompanied and assisted co-ops from another division on a Station wide grating inspection yielding potentially life saving results from several locations; there were no issues caused or related to our findings as they are preventative maintained, and suggestions have been made for replacement grating and supports in key locations. I also accompanied and assisted Co-ops from another division with coal fineness testing making sure the pulverized coal mills were functioning within our quality range to maximize on the coal that we are burning; reports were generated and submitted to senior engineering for review.
Production Engineering & Technical Services, Fuels - Intern
During this internship I executed Flow Acceleration Corrosion testing on high energy piping at major Elbows. I Investigated gas piping conditions, and recommended configuration changes based on flow meter requirements via CADD drawings. I utilized P&ID drawings, and Asset Suite to locate over 300 valves in a 12 story pulverized coal power plant and physically located each valve; then escorted contractors to perform acoustic valve testing on these identified valves. I accompanied our resident boiler specialist to the top of our 108 MW Pulverized coal boiler to conduct Ultrasonic Testing on steam tube wall thickness, and recommend replacement as to prevent tube failures during operation. I assisted with Air Preheater Testing to identify the amount of oxygen infiltration by firstly conducting several tests for oxygen quality at the air preheater, then up at the top of the stack, in combination with control room readings we identified a variance that required further action; in response my fellow intern and I walked down the air preheater system and identified several significant leaks on building penetrations, and in the precipitator building on confined space entry doors. These findings were input into a report along with recommendations to quantify the issue to a tolerable state. In addition to these major projects I also had monthly and weekly reports to generate from using Pi and other software that access and prints transmitted data from out power plants to a spread sheet that intern generates graphical images for analysis of operation conditions.
