Co-Founder
Established in 2020, Slavers of New York is a group of independent artists, educators and researchers that use historical data and public art to expose the legacy of slavery in New York City. We aim to educate New Yorkers about the history of slavery in this city and bring hundreds of years of history to light that have been otherwise forgotten or ignored, in order to encourage public atonement through knowledge. Since its inception, Slavers of New York has placed over 1,000 stickers around Brooklyn and Manhattan, with information around the history behind the city’s street names, neighborhoods, and landmarks, and the slave owners they were named for, in an effort to educate as many New Yorkers as possible about their surroundings and to inspire and encourage them to learn more; as demographics and community values change, we want our work to prompt New Yorkers to reconsider who should be honored and how we develop our national identity.Historian & educator Linda K. Kerber wrote in 1967 about the New York Antislavery Society & abolitionists, saying “When the New Year [of 1834] dawned, the abolitionist movement was in a position constantly to remind New Yorkers- by pamphlets, by speeches, and by its own exemplary integration- that the city did have a [racism] problem, and was not going to be allowed to ignore it.” Slavers of New York aims to use a similar approach to remind & educate New Yorkers about the history of slavery and to show that in order for progress to happen, it cannot be ignored. Using census records and in-depth historical research, we have also developed a map of over 500 locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City named for documented slave owners, with over 200 names logged and counting, including locally well-known ones like Stuyvesant, Bergen, and Nostrand. Our work thus far has been featured in The Architectural League of New York's Urban Omnibus, Guernica Magazine, Gimlet Media’s podcast Resistance, and The New York Times.
