The MOFs are optical fibres whose structures are modified by introducing air channels along the fibre length. The MOFs are optical fibres whose structures are modified by introducing air channels along the fibre length. The modifications result in a change of the light-propagation mechanism, leading to numerous unique characteristics of the fibres (endlessly single mode propagation, tailored dispersion, large mode areas, etc.) Additionally, the fibres’ air channels allow for filling the fibres with foreign media (gases or liquids). The ability to coherently manipulate the atoms filling a MOF enables dynamic control of their absorption and dispersion properties. This capability opens interesting applications of the system, in particular, in the construction of all-optical switches or delay lines. Show less
