My work brings together the fields of archaeology and computational linguistics to quantify the social and economic landscapes emerging from cuneiform cultural heritage sites in the Midfle East. Using geospatial network analysis I visualize early these sites and the literate cultures that inhabited them (Hittite, Assyrian, and Sumerian) in social networks. Ongoing research includes tracking the flow people and the exchange of commodities in Bronze Age societies (2100-1800 B.C.). By combining classical philological methods with natural language processing and machine learning, I'm able to disambiguate the actors, cliques and groups found in large archaeological assemblages ( c. 100,000 cuneiform tablets). This work also demonstrates how networks of internally related archives provide a means of mapping the overlapping data sets from ancient texts and modern archaeological records. The resulting models explain the hierarchical roles and positions of individuals and groups within a society, and their proximity to named locations across the sites in the ancient Near East.
