"Data science is too expensive." That used to be true. Data storage was costly; specialized tools were needed to process and analyze that data; getting people with the right skills meant building a new department.Today every business can afford a data science program. Cloud providers have driven infrastructure costs down significantly. Open source languages passed legacy software providers in breadth and depth. Fractional employment models provide expert knowledge without long-term cost commitments. Fractional Data Science combines these capabilities to create low cost, quickly implemented data solutions for our clients. With experience in all parts of the data lifecycle, in both business and technical departments, Fractional Data meets clients wherever they are on the data journey and takes them forward. It's never been easier and less expensive to launch or grow your organization's data science program!

Director, Data Science And AnalyticsOclc Jun 2021 - Jun 2023Dublin, Oh, UsOCLC is making a renewed commitment to helping libraries better serve their patrons with analytics and data science. To that end we're underway on several initiatives in my organization. • Built a new Data Science team within OCLC. This is the first time the company has had a data science department and my role included hiring and establishing the team, identifying and procuring our tools (such as Databricks) and intergrating our work into the rest of the organization. • Rebuilding our analytics infrastructure into a more modern data platform. With Snowflake sitting in the center we're building simple ingestion tool to move data into Snowflake, introducing dbt to the company for transformation, adding a data catalog like Alation to make data accessible and giving our users Tableau so they can create their own dashboards.• Launching a new analytic product for libraries. Built fully in the cloud this app's infrastructure not only supports this product launch but will be a template for future products. -
Director Of Customer And Digital Data, Enterprise AnalyticsL Brands Mar 2018 - May 2021Columbus, Oh, UsAs a part of the Enterprise Analytics department my team manages the enterprise’s customer and digital data supporting Marketing, Data Science and Analytics. We ensure customer data is created and tracked consistently. We build reporting to support users throughout the organization. We partner with external vendors to ingest new data and to send out data for analytic engagements. Some specific accomplishments: • Digital data acquisition – Responsible for understanding externally stored digital data (ie: mobile app logging, website tracking, and digital media contact history). Develop extractions from these sources for internal partners, build processes to turn unstructured data into structured objects and provides analytics/reporting against the data.• Led a project to build a marketing allocation predictive model. Working with a consulting firm we used historical sales data and digital advertising and contact history to create a model forecasting ideal marketing spend by channel, time and geographic area. My team and I were responsible for data collection, we led conversations to translate the requirements and explain our data and I led conversations with VS executive leadership to present results. • Leading efforts to build and migrate analytics into Microsoft Azure and defining and implementing services needed for our data scientists to work more quickly. Includes guiding the team, monitoring and projecting costs and consulting to other departments as they take on similar efforts in Azure. • Analytics Automation – Moved the department’s reporting to a suite of interactive R-Shiny dashboards and away from Excel documents sent via email. This accomplished the goals of automating our work while making it more intuitive through visualization. • Talent Management: Support and mentor my team and the broader Data Science & Analytics department. My management led to growth for all my direct team, most notably internal promotions for multiple members. -

Voluteer Data Scientist#Savethecrew Oct 2017 - Jan 2019Extracted, organized and analyzed data based on my own curiosities and the broader needs of STC. My two largest accomplishments were: Social Media Analysis: Analyzed the promotion mix by MLS of its constituent teams. Using Python and the Twitter api extracted tens of thousands of tweets from @MLS account. Processed these to flag the mentions by team. Then in R created visualizations to show the build of promotion activity over time. Results were later picked up and published in The Guardian Initial Analysis: https://twitter.com/asmith2729/status/971477248455921664 Guardian Article: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/mar/14/does-mls-really-promote-flashier-clubs-over-less-glamorous-ones Ticket Tracking Program: STC wanted to understand available seats for Crew games and needed a method to gather this data. Using Python (Beautiful Soup and Selenium modules) I wrote a program that scraped seat by seat availability data from Crew ticketing site. I automated this on an AWS EC2 instance to run twice daily. Comparing the resulting data sets over time showed seats shifting from available to sold.
