Sustainable solid carbons are increasingly in demand across a range of greening industries, offering improved product performance and reduced environmental impact. The right combination of feedstock selection, upgrading technology, and application knowledge can bring circularity to rubber, plastic, and construction industries. I am a technical specialist, with an industrial and academic expertise focused on the production of sustainable alternatives to traditional carbon black. Whether these sustainable solid carbons come from transforming tyres into recovered carbon black (rCB) or natural gas into plasma black, a solid understanding of the materials and processes involved is key for delivering a consistent quality product to end users.Beyond sustainable alternatives to carbon black, I’m also interested in work to expand the production and market uptake of other sustainable solid carbons. This interest covers the subjects of biological carbon capture and storage with biochar, as well as sustainable graphitic materials being developed on the frontiers of material science. I have hands-on experience of using pyrolysis, milling, and pelletising technologies to produce sustainable solid carbons in the UK, EU, and India. Only with meaningful collaboration across industries and borders can we move forward in our collective goal of tackling the climate crisis.
