My work was aimed at developing a structural analysis strategy to enable accurate finite element analysis of composite laminate products commensurate with early design stages. I also looked at building on my supervisor’s work by defining new Simulation Intent methodology to capture composite specfic modelling and idealisation decisions made when employing these and existing analysis strategies. As part of my work I had to:-Conduct a comprehensive literature review on CAD technologies, the design and analysis process of composite laminate components and the tools and frameworks used when moving from the CAD domain to the analysis domain;-Identify gaps in the common analysis methods, in this case a computationally inexpensive way to analyse relatively thick 3D composite components, and develop my own novel analysis methodology for these components;-Build on the Simulation Intent framework to include composite specfic analysis decisions to enable the creation of fit-for-purpose analysis models;-Create a semi-automated workflow to take the defined Simulation Intent and build analysis models in my chosen package. In this case this was achieved using the python API within Abaqus (FEA), CADFix (CAD), Microsoft Excel (Simulation intent) and SQL (relational database).During my time as a PhD student, I was also hired as a postgraduate teaching assistant (PGTA) to assist with the teaching of computer lab-based tutorials. During my three years I helped to teach:-Design and manufacturing – This module involved the design of a two-stage gearbox and modelling the design in Solidworks. My role was to assist the students in the design process and troubleshoot any issues that they encountered while generating the assembly in Solidworks;-CAE3 – Basic introduction to Abaqus and Ansys (CFD);-CAE4 – Progression on skills in Abaqus, expanding to optimisation analysis, and further CAD development using CATIA.

My position at Magellan Aerospace was based out of the Quality Assurance department. As part of my job I dealt with:-The data logging and analysis of non-conformance reports (NCRs) at the daily material review board meeting (MRB), including any actions required for 8D and further FMEA projects;-Compiling and management of first article inspection (FAI) reports, including an initiative spearheaded by myself to create a central location for the storage of these reports and an identification and cataloguing system so they could be located easily by anyone in the department;-Overseen the QA departments hex-board (in-house task management system), including updating of the daily tasks, 6S criteria, safety concerns and non-conformance issues. This also included the daily walk around (SCRUM style meetings) of the other manufacturing cells hex-boards;-Manual inspection of parts using checklists and working drawings provided by the customer for reference;-Basic coordinate measuring machines (CMM) programming.During my time there I was also given the opportunity to act as the on-site assistant project manager for a Continuous Improvement (CI) project consisting of the relocation and renovation of several departments to create a more efficient flow through the factory floor for parts.
