I am a research wildlife biologist with more than 25 years of experience. Most of my experience includes studies of birds, including raptors, shorebirds, and waterbirds, that can be directly applied to managing their populations. I have completed research that includes both conservation of bird populations and reduction of conflicts with birds and people. Most recently, I have worked on projects that focus on understanding flight ecology of large raptors to reduce the risk of bird interactions with renewable energy infrastructure. A better understanding of how and where golden eagles, bald eagles, and California Condors fly will help inform where construction of wind turbines can occur with limited risk to these species. I also work with several wildlife management agencies (both state and federal) to determine how bird populations respond to management that is intended to reduce damage. Specifically, I work with populations of Black Vultures that cause damage at industrial, residential and agriculture sites to understand how their populations can be managed to reduce damage. My research also includes understanding risk of vultures colliding with aircraft.
