In mid-2009, I deployed to Afghanistan as part of MRTF-2 (Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force 2), where I served for 10 months as an engineering surveyor within the Works Management Team. Our mission focused on rebuilding critical infrastructure and mentoring local contractors in construction practices. Operating in a war zone presented unparalleled physical and emotional challenges, as well as constant danger and environmental extremes.My role involved conducting surveys for a range of essential projects, including hospitals, roads, government facilities, sewage treatment plants, underground perishable food storage, and even the first-ever girls’ school in the region. These surveys were the foundation for designing infrastructure, which was then tendered to local contractors for construction under our supervision.At times, I had to survey at night using night vision goggles due to the high risk of working during daylight hours. In addition to supporting the reconstruction efforts, I also conducted surveys for projects led by American and Australian Special Forces, adapting to their unique requirements and operational needs.This role demanded not only technical expertise but also the resilience to perform under extreme conditions while fully equipped as a soldier
