I oversee the Welland Fire and Emergency Services, a high-performing team that provides all-hazard emergency services to a growing community that is home to over 57,000 residents. Many athletes, students, and visitors enjoy the many modern facilities within. WFES is a composite fire department operating from three modern stations, and we advocate for fire safety across our community and provide an incredible front-door service. Today’s leaders must be progressive, succinct, compassionate, and engaged. Strategic leadership means we must continually adjust to the environment creatively and logically. Using fact-based decision units, leaders must be willing to challenge the status quo while remaining cost-conscious while helping people enhance our services. Fire services must align with the changing community, social, economic, and business needs. Focusing on internal and external relationships, leaders must have a visible presence in the community and champion the message of public service excellence, accountability, and collaboration. Inclusive and collaborative human resource ideologies will provide a healthy and safe workplace where people feel respected and engaged. Leaders must create opportunities to support staff who are embracing change and evolving team dynamics.
