About Adam Murray

I am a creative scientist turning strategy and theory into practical, creative change programmes. With 20 years of experience in the environmental sector, working across the globe. I use strategic design, evidence-based approaches, behaviour change theory, and creative communications to design and deliver programmes that can reach a diverse range of audiences. I work with community leaders, visitors, volunteers, young people, supporting them to take action on their terms. I am passionate about enabling more people to connect with each other and to take action within their communities. My most recent role as Head of Community Empowerment at RSPB sees me wrapping up 12 years in the UK's largest nature conservation charity. In my role, I managed a wide range of work from our successful Nature on Your Doorstep project, the Save Our Wild Isles Community Fund to our community development programme for staff and volunteers.

Marketing & Visitor Experience Manager

Norwich, United Kingdom

I started my RSPB journey in 2011 as a Communications Officer, excited to be able to use the skills accumulated from my past jobs and a chance to have an impact on UK Wildlife. The role helped to position the RSPB as the organisation for connecting people with nature, working with our reserves to gain moral, practical and financial support. I specialised in the delivery of the RSPB brand across the region, including printed media, interpretation, marketing and visitor experience planning on reserves. In other words, get more people visiting our reserves and then when they get there to have a consistently great experience and then support us in our conservation work. My role extended this to look at behaviour change campaigns across communities including dog walkers, beach nesting birds and priority landscapes.

Campaigns Programme Manager

Between 2006 and the end of 2010 I worked at Rare, originally based at the English training centre at the University of Kent and then later in Fiji. I worked on many social marketing conservation campaigns from central Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. I was involved in both teaching the Rare Pride Campaign Managers and then supporting them whilst they carry out the 2 year long community based campaigns. Past campaigns have looked at changing levels of knowledge, attitude and ultimately behaviour change. They have targeted issues from illegal bushmeat hunting and over fishing to solid waste management and invasive species.

Jul 2006 - Nov 2010

Education Officer

I used the academic theory of environmental education and put these skills into practice when I became an education officer. This included designing interpretation, public talks and formal teaching from early years through to adults, covering curriculum-based subjects such as animal behaviour, conservation, and marketing. This is where I cut my teeth with public speaking and engagement.
