My research developed novel surface-functionalized super-paramagnetic nanoparticles for the selective recovery of phosphorus and copper from wastewater. My research is being developed into a paper for publication in Water Research. I have presented my research (oral presentation) at the 2013 Sustainable Nanotechnology Organization International Conference in Santa Barbara, California. My research was recognized with a Sustainable Nanotechnology Organization Student Award in 2013. The key to effective research is carefully and methodically developing a comprehensive research plan to the project’s goals. This process entails defining research objectives, identifying the data needed to reach the objectives, and selecting measurement techniques that will deliver the data. Developing such a plan allowed me to achieve research goals ahead of schedule. While conducting research, I have traveled in Wyoming and to the CEREGE research facility near Marseille, France to collaborate with other researchers. I prepare weekly progress reports for submission to my principle instructor and present research results to the research group on a monthly basis.Beyond my personal research, I am responsible for training new graduate students in laboratory procedure and analytical instrument operation. I maintain equipment and purchase laboratory consumables, submitting monthly expense reports to the Civil Engineering Department.

As instructor for the laboratory portion of the University of Wyoming Civil Engineering Materials course, my principle duty was to ensure student safety when preparing and testing samples. Other duties included organizing and instructing the class laboratory portion to introduce students to concrete, masonry, and steel performance testing. Working cooperatively with the department engineer and machine shop technicians, to maintain laboratory equipment and prepare samples. I acted as liaison between students and the primary class instructor, communicating assignments and students’ questions. I was also responsible for creating laboratory assignments and grading technical and written assignments from the course’s classroom portion.

As an intramural official, I refereed numerous sports with the primary objectives of ensuring participant safety and enforcing intramural policies. Accomplishing this required proactively identifying inter-player conflicts and resolving the situation before it escalated. This was done by communicating effectively with players and working cohesively with other officials before, during, and after each intramural game. Because fouls occur suddenly and without warning, the ability to reach rapid, accurate decisions is crucial when officiating a sporting event.

With the Wyoming Conservation Corps, I traveled throughout Wyoming and Montana, living and working outdoors in inclement weather, assisting conservation projects. Projects conducted on behalf of federal agencies, the State of Wyoming, and private landowners included riparian zone protection, historic structure restoration, wildlife surveys, flood protection, and natural history surveys. Living and working in close quarters required excellent interpersonal dialog to foster good working conditions and head off potential disagreements. The foremost responsibility of a lifeguard is to ensure the health and safety of pool patrons. At times, more than 150 patrons swam in pool at once; creating a chaotic, unpredictable environment. Safeguarding all the patrons with only three lifeguards and the shift supervisor required excellent communication and planning to establish and maintain overlapping areas of responsibility. To achieve this, the pool staff held bi-weekly safety meetings, drilled regularly, and engaged patrons though safety classes and swimming lessons.Continually addressing patron concerns, assisting lifeguards, monitoring pool equipment, and interacting with the public built strong multitasking abilities. I was responsible for testing and maintaining pool chemical levels, handling and preparing chlorine, algaecide, and other chemicals regularly. As supervisor, it was my responsibility to interact with the public to answer questions, resolve conflicts, and address complaints. Equally important as addressing public concerns, was recognizing and resolving conflicts between employees before it could interfere with the guards’ performance and endanger patrons.
