My primary responsibilities involve the work-up of new patients and care for in-hospital patients. I review new patient histories to create a summary of the progression of the primary disease processes to present the cases to the staff internists. I interview clients to obtain patient histories using open-ended questioning techniques. Based on my physical exam and history, I create problem lists with associated ranked differentials for working through a problem-oriented approach to diagnosis. I perform abdominal ultrasounds and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirates with instruction in basic techniques from the staff internists. I critically assess labwork results in conjunction with the presentation of each patient to create either a diagnostic or therapeutic plan based on the diagnosis. In addition, I am receiving further experience in the diagnosis and long-term management of gastrointestinal, respiratory, renal, hematologic, and endocrine diseases such as diabetes mellitus, DKA, hypo- and hyperadrenocorticism, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic kidney disease, IMHA, and inflammatory rhinitis. I assist with endoscopic procedures, including upper and lower GI endoscopy, cystoscopy, and rhinoscopy. During these procedures, I obtain biopsies during endoscopic procedures as well as learning basic techniques of instrument handling. Once weekly, I prepare journal or physiology rounds, critically reviewing two recent journal articles or presenting a chapter from Rose Clinical Physiology of Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disorders.

I cared for the animals in the North America region, primarily those housed in the children's zoo. In addition, I assisted the full-time keepers in maintenance and upkeep of the enclosures in the region. I also worked with the ponies and miniature horse in the pony ride and interacted with the public, answering any questions and ensuring the safety of the animals and the patrons.

I set up and maintained surgical equipment. I prepared animals for surgery, assisted veterinarian during surgery, and monitored animals during surgery and recovery. I gave vaccinations and medication to animals as needed and performed the intake and release of animals.

I cared for all dog and cats within the store and performed duties related to the upkeep and maintenance of the kennel. I also managed and trained the kennel staff in the cleaning and care procedures necessary for the continued good health of the animals.

My primary duty was to assist the veterinarian in examining and treating animals, primarily domestic cats and dogs. In addition, I performed a variety of diagnostic tests, including snap tests for a number of diseases, general urinalysis, blood panels, and fecal analysis.

I fed and cared for a number of a variety of animals, including big cats, primates, and farm animals. I also performed maintenance on the grounds of the sanctuary and assisted in the construction and repair of enclosures of big cats and farm animals.
