The United States Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets because of their distinctive service headgear, are a special operations force tasked with five primary missions: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and counter-terrorism. Special Forces groups are organized in small teams of 12 men — a.k.a. Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA). A typical Green Beret Team structure usually consists of two each of the following: Weapons Sergeants, Communications Sergeants, Medical Sergeants and Engineering Sergeants. A Commander, Assistant Commander (Warrant Officer), Operations/Intelligence Sergeant and Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) complete the team. These teams can change according to the type of mission. A Special Forces Communications Sergeant is trained in the use of various communications equipment ranging from hand held radios all the way up to high-tech satellite communication devices. A Communications Sergeant is responsible for all aspects of the installation, utilization and use of communications equipment. Equipment-related organization and planning are performed , and other soldiers operating communications equipment receive training from the Communications Sergeant. While a communications setup is in use, the Communications Sergeant takes on a supervisory role over that setupThe means by which military communications are transmitted and received on the battlefield are put into place by the Communications Sergeants. In the case of special operations, a Communications Sergeant is often on hand to manage mission communications. The low-profile nature of these missions typically requires the Communications Sergeant to possess a mission-appropriate security clearance. Encoded transmissions and other unconventional communication tools are the hallmarks of special operations communications tasks.I have seen service in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Oman
