During my Insight Fellowship, I prototyped an app called WobbleWatch to help determine the daily risk of falling for elderly users using accelerometer data from wearable tech. This involved building and training a hybrid CNN-LSTM model using TensorFlow to identify rare fall and pre-fall events. I used this app to help users visualize daily fall risk in a simple dashboard with a shareable summary for care providers.
  • Florida Atlantic University
    Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Florida Atlantic University Sep 2018 - Aug 2020
    Jupiter, Florida
With a focus on evolved collective behavior in fish, this role has involved immersive collaborative work with multiple neuroscience labs studying model organisms like fruit flies, zebrafish, and Mexican cavefish. Based on the John D. MacArthur Campus, home to FAU's Brain Institute, Max Planck Florida Institute, and Scripps Florida, I have facilitated and consulted for multiple interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Syracuse University
    Nsf Igert Fellow
    Syracuse University Aug 2014 - Aug 2018
IGERT stands for Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship. As an IGERT Fellow, I am supported by the NSF to complete my PhD research while following a curriculum that spans several departments, studying topics like physical cell biology, open problems in soft matter, communication of science, ethical issues in research, and public policy. My research is in the young field of active matter, where we study the physics of things that can move themselves---often these kinds of systems are biological. As a field, we hope to provide results for biomedical applications while exploring a unique and new area of basic science. Under the direction of Prof. M. Cristina Marchetti, my work focuses on developing our theoretical understanding of emergent properties of active particles. This has led to an interesting collaboration studying a large-scale collective behavior observed in M. Xanthus, a fascinating social bacteria. I have developed my own software base for simulation and analysis using C/C++ and other GNU tools. This position has also involved mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. For more information about the programs I am involved in, check out the attached links.
  • Syracuse University
    Graduate Teaching Assistant
    Syracuse University Aug 2012 - Aug 2014
    Syracuse, Ny
Alongside my graduate coursework and research, I was employed on a teaching fellowship as an aid to undergraduate physics courses. Generally this involves working as a recitation instructor, leading students through problem sets and briefly lecturing on topics on a weekly basis. Over the summer of 2013, I was the instructor for the Physics I: Mechanics, and this involved all of the responsibilities of running a college-level course. As a recitation instructor, I have worked in the following courses:- Introduction to Astronomy- Physics I: Mechanics- Physics II: Electricity and MagnetismAdditionally, I provided undergraduate homework help in our department's physics clinic. This responsibility involved spending two hours per week answering student questions on any course in the undergraduate physics curriculum.
  • Yale University
    Post-Baccalaureate Researcher
    Yale University Sep 2010 - Apr 2012
    Batavia, Il
This group was geared toward motivating and developing liquid argon time projection chambers, a detector design that allows for cutting edge visualization of neutrino events. My work here primarily involved computer programming, experimental simulation, and data analysis. My involvement in the ArgoNeuT, MicroBooNE, and LBNE collaborations was via their common simulation and analysis base, LArSoft. On LArSoft's development team, I held the role of geometry expert. This meant being the go-to person for maintenance and design of virtual representations of these detectors, as well as their functionality in the larger software scheme. My work with simulation and data was centered around analyzing data collected by the prototype detector, ArgoNeuT, with the goal of comparing critical features of the anti-neutrino data set to expected values and exploring a/symmetry with what was found in neutrino data set. With our analysis software in development and the new detector design, this involved meticulous communication with many other collaborators regarding the meaning of measurements made with this kind of device.Additionally, as this was a budding technology in the area of high energy particle physics, I aided collaboration leaders in their successful navigation of the DOE critical decision process for project funding. This was a very unique and exciting aspect of working in this group as it involved the presentation of new technology and aspects of collaborative project management.
  • Massachusetts Institute Of Technology
    Research Technician
Massachusetts Institute Of Technology Sep 2009 - Aug 2010
    Batavia, Il
My primary role in this position was to monitor the beamline neutrino experiment, MiniBooNE, which is located at Fermilab. While here, I developed a computer program to automate our collaboration's experimental monitoring tasks, which proved to be a significant aid to the rest of the collaboration in the continued running of the experiment. Working this position also allowed me to observe data analysis performed by researchers at group meetings. My interest led me to briefly work with a senior scientist who was interested in using boosted decision trees to more efficiently identify neutrino events.
  • Boston University
    Undergraduate Researcher
    Boston University Apr 2008 - Aug 2009
As an undergraduate research assistant in the Boston University Nano Lab, I contributed to design, simulation, fabrication, and analysis of nano-resonator devices. This involved learning about many interesting ideas in condensed matter as well as developing technical skills with electron microscopy and lithography, reactive ion etching, and computer aided design and simulation of simple resonator structures. This was also an opportunity to explore ideas in superconductor devices and quantum computing.
  • American University
    Undergraduate Researcher
    American University May 2007 - Aug 2007
As an undergraduate research assistant for Professor Nathan Harshman, I developed plots and analysis for use in a publication on quantum entanglement.
