About Adam Scotch

When companies need a Technology and Innovation Executive specializing in R&D and Engineering -- to stand up an organization and set the tone for work culture to enable collaborative R&D – this is where I am brought in.The Results? Tech and product portfolio development from opportunity identification to product design, pilot to commercial launch at global scale.R&D roadmaps for materials and hardware product development that solve business problems.CONTACT: adamscotch@comcast.netThe Problems I SolveAs an Engineer, Technologist and Scientist, I’m trained to proactively identify problems, apply root cause analysis and uncover novel ways to leave things better than they were before. I solve practical technical problems concerning materials development, testing/characterization and selection, failure analysis and process development – and are achieved in partnership with customers and business stakeholders. I poise companies to capitalize on emerging trends by remaining current and engaged with the Academic and National Laboratory community (see below listed volunteer roles). How I LeadI build teams of Engineers, Scientists and Technologists (new and senior) and lead performance turnarounds by driving culture transformation built on trust, communications and accountability. I set the tone and forge trust by digging in WITH them and leading from the front – so they know there’s nothing I ask that I don’t do myself. Of equal importance, I support best practice sharing and mentorship through an open-door policy, group and 1:1 discussion. My Journey to R&D LeadershipGrowing up poor in rural Ohio, I learned about character, the value of hard work and the importance of problem-solving and treating others with respect performing manual labor at my family-owned RV campground and as a budding entrepreneur (I had a thriving lawn mowing and ice cream business)! Taking my love of problem-solving and innovation to a whole new level, I went on to earn my B.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering. I’ve since applied these learnings to earn multiple patents, harness new technologies and develop products and processes in University, National Lab, Corporate and Startup settings.Printed & Flexible Hybrid Electronics | RF Antenna Materials & Manufacturing | LEDs & Semiconductor Backend Packaging | Polymer Adhesives, Dielectrics & Encapsulants | Functional Inks Development & Printing | Advanced Ceramics | Failure Analysis & Metallography | Sintering & Powder Processing | Materials Characterization

  • Wafer
    R&D Director
    Wafer 2017 - 2021
    Beverly, Ma, Us
As Employee #5 of this startup with a business card that officially read “Director, Process Development & Manufacturing,” I established an R&D lab capable of scaling to support high-volume manufacturing of wireless communications systems using advanced phased array antenna technologies. HIGHLIGHTS:➜ Developed novel antenna technology based on tunable dialectics from concept to prototype to manufacturable product. ➜ Created a repeatable process for building and delivering a high-quality product to the customer while engaging with investors, key customers, and partners. ➜ Supported global team during COVID by established safety protocols, contact tracing processes and a hybrid model that allowed for maximum productivity without minimal disruption. ➜ Elevated team morale and performance by instituting performance management and project structures, communications channels, and collaboration and best practice sharing including 1:1 mentoring and group discussions.
  • Osram
    R&D Manager
    Osram 2011 - 2017
    Munich, Bavaria, De
As R&D Manager overseeing LED Process Technologies, I continued to identify emerging trends as the Technical Liaison to MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program, by partnering with Innovation Management to identify cutting-edge companies and technologies, and by spearheading development programs with leading universities, research institutions and small businesses. In addition to elevating our cleanroom into a state-of-the-art showroom that brought Sales, R&D and customers together to improve LED lighting quality and discuss pressing problems, I secured patents, created manufacturing processes, build and led teams that continually introduced new features and products. PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS:➜ AUTOMOTIVE MARKET: Reduced cost production, extended lifespan and increased power output of white LEDs that solved an industry-wide polymer degradation problem – enabling the scale-up of products sold today for use in 75% of the automotive lighting market. ➜ STAGE & STUDIO LIGHTING MARKET: Developed lighting solutions embraced by Hollywood for their superior color quality, eliminated the need for power generators and viewed as ideal for indoor and outdoor scene filming.
  • Osram
    Acting Manager
    Osram 2009 - 2011
    Munich, Bavaria, De
Wearing multiple hats as a Principal Scientist, Acting Team Manager-Cleanroom Operations and Project Leader role for several R&D projects, we explored everything from LED device packaging to cooling strategies to flexible materials for large area LED lighting and printed electronics. HIGHLIGHTS:➜ Built team from inception that investigated the use of advanced materials in applications for LED components and systems, electronic controls, general lighting, automotive and display/optic illumination products.➜ Led project teams that explored everything from LED device packaging to cooling strategies, flexible materials for LED lighting to use of printed electronics in manufacturing.
  • Osram
    Principal Scientist
    Osram 2004 - 2011
    Munich, Bavaria, De
After roles at a National Lab and at a University, I pivoted to corporate R&D. I helped this U.S. Lighting Manufacturer to recognize the business potential of emerging LED lighting technology and secured funding earmarked for its first U.S. lab dedicated to LED R&D. HIGHLIGHTS:➜ Co-authored proposal that secured U.S. Dept. of Energy project funding. ➜ Participated in thermal management and materials development aspects of high-efficiency LED downlights project that achieved all performance targets.➜ Rapidly pivoted from transparent ceramics development used in high-intensity discharge lights to LED backend development.
