Tutored CIS*2750 for several students. The course involved writing memory-efficient C code linked together with a single-page web application (SPA) using Node.js for the back-end. The students used the following technologies: C, Valgrind, Makefile, Bash, HTML5, CSS3, Javascript (vanilla, jQuery, Node.js), as well as Git for version control.I assisted students with understanding C concepts such as dynamic memory management, proper use of pointers, writing clean/concise code, taking advantage of pre-processor macros for easy debugging, and the importance of testing and documentation. I walked students through Valgrind, a memory debugging tool which identifies memory leaks. I encouraged students to write Bash scripts to automate testing/debugging.Many students had no experience working with web development; I walked them through the process of browsers communicating with web servers and how information is sent between them. I introduced students to Promises, which allowed them to control asynchronous tasks happening within their Node application. I also assisted with front-end design/implementation and encouraged a mobile-friendly approach to development.
