I assisted the inspectors and engineers with their tasks while learning a few of their job responsibilities. I learned and performed lab testing on asphalt and concrete. Another summer intern and I completed some design work for a few small projects. I also learned new techniques and procedures for roadway construction from the viewpoint of the engineers and inspectors.

While in this summer position, I performed various duties as assigned by my supervisor including filling potholes, raking and shoveling hot mix, cleaning out driveway structures, under drains, preventive maintenance on equipment and many other duties.  I operated the rubber tired loader to load trucks with all types of materials at the stock pile locations.  I also operated the skid steer when needed.  I assisted in debris pick up and sign and cone placement during the daily traffic control set ups.  During the traffic control applications, it was important to know the standards and guidelines to ensure the signage was placed in accordance to the required standards.  These guidelines were all laid out in the Traffic Control Plans.  I was able to learn new techniques while improving my skills and adhering to strict safety precautions.  I was privileged to learn from and be a part of an incredibly knowledgeable group of people. With my college major being Construction Management, while working at TxDOT, I have had the opportunity of gaining a wealth of knowledge about roadway maintenance.

While in this summer position, I helped shoot grade and perform maintenance on various pieces of equipment.  I operated the roller, backhoe, and excavator. I also performed traffic safety and put up traffic cones and signs.  I was able to learn new techniques while improving my skills in an atmosphere where safety was of utmost importance.

During my time here, I operated a truck and trailer picking up and delivering everything from lawn mowers to cab tractors and wide implements. I also helped around the service department filing papers, interacting with customers, assisting mechanics as well as cleaning up the shop. While here I bettered my understanding of tractors and the mechanics behind them. I also improved my customer service skills and learned how to interact with people in a professional manner.

I stacked and loaded livestock feed by hand and with feed dollies; stacked and loaded hay bales, cleaned feed stock room, helped customers with purchases, lawn maintenance as needed, and any other task assigned by owner.  Due to the demand of lifting heavy items, I had to use good safe lifting techniques at all times.  I was responsible for ensuring all supplies were loaded in the customer's vehicle and was not damaged.  I made sure the entire warehouse and store area was clean and free from any trip hazards.

General shop labor;  moved and stacked sand for sandblasting with forklift, ran errands when asked, washed frac tanks with pressure washer, welded small parts, fences and gates, cleaned shop and company vehicles, and anything else assigned by my supervisor.  All safety procedures and proper protective equipment were followed at all times.  While working here, I learned a lot about good safe practices.  This job consisted of being around large heavy items that were always moving, whether it was moving trailers from the sandblasting area to the paint shop or moving supplies with the forklift.
