Technical Director

Var-Chem Products

Hands-on role including significant individual R&D lab work with emphasis on applications and structure-property relationships, as well as management of the technical function. Direct and conduct all aspects of laboratory research / development, customer satisfaction, new raw material suitability and formulation scale-up. Under my direction, our development lab has recently given our product lines a new thrust into "Green Technology" using innovative formulation approaches and significantly reducing petroleum based raw materials. Worked closely with the marketing department and through direct customer contact to successfully launch these products. Continually finding ways to make quality products less expensively. Recently found an alternative to a raw material costing $1.16/lb for $0.30/lb . It was considered a limited use co-product in a completely unrelated industry.Directly reformulated several large volume items (totaling 3,000,000 lb/yr) using more cost effective resins, reducing raw material costs for those items by 16%. Set up more cost effective Sun Manufacturing facilities in Canada and the Midwest. Instrumental in successfully utilizing the largest varnish manufacturing plant in the US, lowering our manufacturing costs for items made there by nearly 20%. I have been the "hired gun" in charge of seeing all first batches through from start to finish. In 2009, Var-Chem produced some 14,000,000 lbs of quality ink vehicle and overprint varnish.Recently managed the successful implementation of a new "state of the art" cone and plate rheometer to replace outdated technology. Co-authored a research paper featured in the February 2010 edition of "Paints and Coatings Industry Magazine" regarding the IR analysis of Modified Rosin Ester Resins. Computer skills include proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as NWA Quality Analyst and Process Pro software systems.

Covered the Cleveland area as part of National Sales Force. Increased annual sales in that region from $500,000 to $1,500,000. I still service these accounts today. Gained customers confidence and loyalty through knowledge of my trade, solid technical training and the use of sharp interpersonal skills. I also have the ability to discuss pertinent regulatory compliance due to my experience in this area.Routinely field general customer questions and complaints using the telephone and internet.Complete all customer compliance and regulatory paperwork including NAFTA and REACH.Member of NAPIN - Represent Var-Chem at industry Technical conferences.Member of MNYPIA - attend monthly meetings and Golf Outings

Oct 1998 - Oct 2010

Chemist /Compliance Coordinator

Var-Chem Products

Formulated ink vehicles, overprint and pigment flushing varnishes and wax compounds; evaluated and secured new raw materials.Ran the Analytical Lab and developed new product / raw material testing procedures. Purchased and set up Gas Chromatograph for use as a QC tool - then found unlimited and invaluable uses for it to determine unknown competitive sample compositions. Also proficient in the use of the infra-red spectrophotometer to identify unknown competitive formulations.Discovered that using a raw material found in detergent formulation produced a high performance heat-set gel varnish which we sold at 2,000,000 lbs/yr for 6 years. Formulated another heat set gel vehicle for Sun Chemical that was unsurpassed and became the largest in the US (7,000,000 lbs/yr). Set up a production facility in Spain to supply Europe. While Tall oil based domestic resin prices skyrocketed in 2002, I searched for imported Gum based sources and single handedly secured two items that could be used for alternate low cost formulations. They were available for approximately 35% less per pound, saving the company millions of dollars over the coming years. These two items are still used today. Worked in the Quality Control Lab for 1 year where the final additions are made before batch approval. Managed regulatory department responsible for OSHA / EPA compliance including employee training, State and Federal UST / RTK / SPCC Program implementation and maintenance. Directed purchase and implementation of "in-tank" monitoring system for 8 UST's (64,000 gallon total capacity). Also researched UST insurance carriers and found one that offered the required $1,000,000 coverage for $7,200/yr. instead of the $53,000/yr. that our existing carrier would have charged. Responsible for MSD sheets for each product and the creation of the 16-point OSHA format we still use today. I am the only MSDS contact.
