Aug 2013 - Sep 2015

Head Of Air Traffic Management Engineering Solutions

Fareham, Hants, Gb

I became Head of Department for Engineering Solutions in 2010 where I was accountable for around 200 engineers working across 60+ projects. I re-organised the team such that all major projects were overseen by Programme Engineering Managers – giving coverage and improving consistency and communication across the department. As part of this role, I also directly managed the Engineering activities within the Air Traffic Management Solution programme, which was defining and developing the Technology Transformation for NATS.One notable achievement in this role was leading strategy definition, Requirements capture and Development phases of the first deployment of the ITEC Trajectory based system into Prestwick Area Control Centre in Scotland.

Jul 2011 - Aug 2013

Senior Engineering Manager

Fareham, Hants, Gb

Engineering Manager for £160m Air Traffic Controller Tools (iFACTS) Programme.iFACTS is a tool that uses complex mathematical algorithms to precisely define flight trajectories and undertake collision detection (closest point of approach, distance at closest point, geometry at closest point, etc), 'what if' predictions for controller commands to assist in resolving conflicts and conformance monitoring to ensure separation of aircraft. The tool output is in the form of graphical presentations (plan view and virtual view) of aircraft conflicts - giving controllers the minimum separation that will be achieved (base on current routing and tactical instruction) and time available to resolve each conflict.Delivering IFACTS has to be the major achievement of my career so far. IFACTS is the first step in the journey towards Trajectory based Operations and the concepts of SESAR. In its first year in service it has increased air traffic capacity by up to 40% in some sectors and 15% across the operation. At the same time it has improved safety by delivering the lowest number of safety events on record. It was a tough project with some major operational, technical and political challenges.

Mar 2007 - Jul 2011

Engineering Manager

Fareham, Hants, Gb

Engineering Manager for TC/LMARS project and NOTA Airspace change London Terminal Control & London Military Area Radar Service (TC/LMARS) projectI managed an 80 strong team of Software / System Engineers to successfully deliver 26 system elements used to provide technical services to enable the relocation the London Terminal Control (TC) (including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, Luton & London City Airport approach functions) and London Military (LMARS) operations from West Drayon (nr Heathrow) to the new Swanwick Control Centre in Hampshire. Finally, I worked closely with the projects’ stakeholders and unit managers to achieve system acceptance.NOTA Airspace changeDuring this period, I also worked with a joint NATS/IAA team to deliver the NOTA airspace change on the North Atlantic. I undertook the roles of system engineering manager, test manager and transition manager for the NOTA project. When I joined the project has made very little progress and needed to be delivered in just four months. Despite having to implement and test system changes to five NATS systems and two systems owned by the Irish Aviation Authority, the NOTA was delivered into operational service on time.

Jan 2004 - Mar 2007

Solutions Architect

Fareham, Hants, Gb

As Solutions Architect for Networks and Middleware, I established the strategy which included the development a NATS ring-main architecture – which transformed the old analogue telecommunication network and moved it into the digital age.I also worked with several suppliers, including IBM, Lockheed Martin and Indra to specify Middleware to enhance standard Operating System capabilities for safety critical, real-time & highly resilient application such ar Air Traffic Management.

Mar 2002 - 2004

Systems Engineer

Fareham, Hants, Gb

Starting as a Graduate, I undertook several roles as a Systems Engineer on project such as:New En-route Centre projectThis major transformation project completely replaced the systems and services used to deliver the London En Route Air Traffic Control service to both civilian and Military users. It also managed to relocation of these operations from LATCC West Drayton to the New En Route Centre (NERC) at Swanwick in Hampshire.I worked as a Software Systems Engineer and was responsible for delivery of several sub-systems (Data Communication, Support Information, Meteorological data, etc) and developed a particular skill in networks and middleware. At the time, this project was the most difficult and ambitious undertaking that the newly formed NATS (previously the CAA) had undertaken. It formed the first stage of the Two Centre Strategy - which has resulted in the provision of Air Traffic Service being centralised in two new Centres at Swanwick and Prestwick and the closure of LATCC West Drayton, Manchester Centre (MACC) and Atlantic House (Prestwick). A project of this scale proved immensely valuable learning experience and allowed me to develop many of the skills and experience I have used throughout my long career at NATS. I worked on the project for 7 years - seeing it from it early requirements phase through development, testing and operational readiness and was lucky enough to be there supporting the operational transition and early life support when the system went operational in January 2002.National Airspace Systems & PeripheralsAs part of my graduate training, I undertook a placement with the NAS team based at LATCC West Drayton. I worked on delivery of change requests to both Hardware and Software elements of the UK Flight Data Processing system (the National Airspace System (NAS)) and also several related peripheral systems allowing connection to data sources and user interfaces.

Oct 1994 - Mar 2002

Sponsored Undergraduate

Fareham, Hants, Gb

As part of my Sandwich Degree, I undertook a year Industrial Placement with NATS.This involved many opportunities to undertake work placements across the business, including working at Heathrow & Glasgow Airports, radar and communication sites and at the West Drayton and Prestwick Air Traffic Control Centre. Also worked closely with the RAF on a number ro projects.
