I am motivated by a few challenges lately.I want agriculture to be diverse. Different crops, grown in different ways, by different people, in different landscapes. Agriculture is our oldest human endeavor (after rock smashing, perhaps) and its vast scope and subtle textures continue to amaze me. In a world where I see farms begin to be enclosed in sterile buildings under artificial light, my affinity is to real people farming in real soils under real sun.I want growth to be inclusive. The last decades have seen globalization shift manufacturing overseas, where people work for less and there is lower environmental oversight. This means that incomes have grown for everyone in the world, except for farmers and industrial workers in the US and EU. I strongly believe that decarbonization and energy system transformation has the potential to leverage everyone’s talents to meet this challenge, particularly in the rural areas where we work.Culture and values matter. Great businesses cannot arise from corrupt cultures, and ultimately this means transparency, trust, vulnerability, willingness to learn and grow, centered around humans.
