Adam Bates serves as Chief Underwriting Officer at MagMutual. He joined MagMutual in 2019 and focuses on bringing a quantitative perspective to the underwriting process, developing best in class tools for the evaluation of risk, and growing a profitable underwriting portfolio.Prior to his current role, Adam held the position of Vice President and Actuary at Allied World Assurance Company, Ltd., where he led the actuarial pricing initiatives for Allied World’s Bermuda platform. Adam was responsible for large account pricing, price and profitability monitoring, pricing tool development and managing a team that supported Allied World Bermuda’s Casualty and Professional Lines underwriting units, with emphasis on U.S. based Fortune 1,000 risks. Adam also led the actuarial function for the company’s North American Property segment. Prior to joining Allied World in 2013, Adam led the Client Analytics initiative at BerkleyMed, a W.R. Berkley member company. At BerkleyMed, Adam was responsible for the marketing, development, and delivery of BerkleyMed’s customized client analytics offering to brokers and clients. Adam has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Actuarial Science from Maryville University, in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS), and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). Adam has served as a panelist at several industry events, including ASHRM and the Bermuda Healthcare Forum. He is a past member of the CAS Candidate Liaison Committee, where he contributed multiple articles to the CAS publication for students, “Future Fellows”.
