After college, I returned to Dayton and started right back up at Bernstein’s with Steve Bernstein. His dedication to his team and openness to their needs inspired me as I became more and more invested in the company’s success and my own development in the industry. I began trying new things and pushing myself to take on additional responsibilities. One of my proudest moments was becoming a partner with him as he began to trust me with the business he had run since 1988.

At 15 years old, all my friends were working at this place called Bernstein’s. It was this great kosher-style deli and restaurant that served the best sandwiches. I decided that this was absolutely the place I needed to be. Starting as a dishwasher and hanging out with my buddies, I realized that not only was Bernstein’s a great place to eat, it was also a great place to work! I began to shift my priorities to learn more about contributing to the team in a more meaningful way. Eventually, I became a line cook, creating short-order sandwiches for all the people who came to enjoy a great lunch with good company. Even when I went to college, I would come back each summer to work on the catering side of the business.
