• Led the iOS, Android, backend, and remote teams in a successful end-to-end rewrite of the LinkedIn Recruiter mobile apps, enabling talent professionals to quickly respond to their hiring needs anytime, anywhere.• Connected millions of job seekers to opportunity by managing and growing the talented iOS team responsible for the LinkedIn Job Search app, and the Jobs tab in the LinkedIn app.

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, I founded, hired, and led the thriving mobile engineering group at IMVU, the original Lean Startup, metaverse pioneer, and now the world’s largest avatar-based social network. It was thrilling to completely reimagine the existing 2D intern-project hybrid apps as fully-native immersive social experiences sporting a custom 3D engine running on OpenGL ES. As a result, our multi-million user (and dollar) apps consistently ranked among the top 150 highest-grossing in the App Store and Google Play (Android top 5 Social, iOS top 10 Social), and the previously desktop-focused company strategically pivoted to mobile.

The team started on NOOK and quickly pivoted to focus on B&N College, where I was a leading member on a founding team that developed the Yuzu iOS app from inception to maturity. Coding in Objective-C, I was responsible for large-scale features, critical bug fixes, code reviews, mentoring, and interviewing.Yuzu is a next-generation reading and note-taking eReader, allowing students to create a personal learning experience that best suits their needs, and allowing educators to engage students with inspiring course materials.

WIMM Labs built an Android-based wearable touch-screen platform (aka smart watch). I was primarily responsible for developing and maintaining core and companion Android applications (e.g. pedometer, compass, Facebook) in Java for the WIMM One smart watch. I was part of a small team that modified the Android 2.1 and 2.3 platforms for use on the device, notably producing a customized Android launcher for the WIMM One.The company was acquired by Google in 2012, but I chose not to don a propeller hat as I preferred apps development over platform work and Objective-C over Java.

Burned out on startups, I tried out independent contracting. It was interesting & spanned a range of technologies, some projects included:• Coding DLNA-compliant A/V media transcoders for a multi-platform UPnP toolkit, written in ANSI C.• Designing & implementing new features and UI for an OS X-based consumer DMS, using Objective-C/Cocoa/Xcode.• Adding new functionality for and fixing bugs in a Windows-based server application, using C/C++/WinAPI/Visual Studio.• Producing customized Android UI/UX prototype applications, the last of which led to a full-time role at WIMM Labs.

Skypop was a mobile social GPS/LBS startup spanning multiple platforms. As a full-stack and client applications developer, I was responsible for building:• public Skypop web site with AJAX+Prototype & ASP.NET• client Skypop application in WinAPI/C++ for Windows PC• client Skypop application using Java for Android phones • client Skypop application using BREW/C++ for Samsung Instinct• client Skypop application using J2ME/Java for Danger Hiptop/Sidekick• client Skypop application using .NET CF/C# for Windows Mobile phonesI also concurrently developed the backend services in C#/ASP.NET+MySQL to serve both high-load mobile and web requests. Within those services, I implemented and maintained our various proprietary location algorithms. For SCM, I used Perforce for half the time, then switched the organization to Subversion.

Akimbo was the first Internet video-on-demand service for consumers. I contributed to several areas of the code base and product line, notably the flagship RCA Akimbo Video on Demand Player set-top box, consumer-facing web applications, and internal content management tools. Implemented Windows Forms, command-line and ASP .NET applications using Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 & 2.0, WinCE & .NET CF 2.0, C# and C++ interop, Microsoft SQL Server, DirectX and Windows Media.I also started from scratch in designing and building test tools for the Akimbo VOD Player and backend service including billing system, using Microsoft .NET 1.1 with C# and MSSQLServer 2000.Because it was a small startup, until a proper one was hired a year or so later, I also was the build engineer, designing and maintaining the original build system used at Akimbo. It integrated unit tests run by NUnit, BVTs and builds from multiple branches, sourced from Perforce SCM.

After giving Microsoft another shot and finding it wasn’t what I wanted in that stage of my career, even in sunny California, I decided to pivot to a startup. Finding the right one took forever, but it was worth the wait…

I knew where I wanted to live but not where I wanted to work, so I took a contract gig in the Hotmail team creating and updating automated tests for MSN Hotmail server tools using C++, Perl and UNIX Shell scripts on FreeBSD and Solaris systems. It was a good team and I was offered a full-time role when the contract expired, but I left because my heart wasn’t in it.

Seattle rained on my parade, so against the advice of nearly everyone I knew, I left Microsoft to travel the country and look for where I wanted to live and work, in that order. I’ve never regretted it.

Working in the Internet Explorer team, I designed, implemented and automated tools and tests for the Windows HTTP Services API (WinHTTP) and the Windows Internet API (WinINet) using C/C++ and Win32 APIs, COM, JScript, and VBScript (via ASP).• Solely responsible for the development of the testing suites for the authentication (Basic/Digest/NTLM/Negotiate/smart cards) and security/certificates (SSL/TLS) areas for WinHTTP• Investigated and solved bugs (memory leaks, scalability, visual, etc) or pushed for outside fixes• Contributed in both the writing and maintenance of new WinHTTP test tools• Wrote, automated and maintained the build verification testing schema for builds of WinHTTP to be released to users• Worked closely with developers and the code to create viable solutions for external and internal customers• Performed regression testing for the WinINet APIs and maintained the test tools that run the tests• Developed and utilized model-based testing tools and techniques to automate test writing, automating myriad previously manual tests
