I led 15 reporters and editors in covering public safety, local government, education and health care. I developed investigations into how school districts fired teachers who crossed ethical boundaries, drove layered coverage of mass shootings, helped a reporter land distinctive stories on homelessness and cultivated new audiences for The Bee while overseeing our Equity Lab. I co-led a McClatchy California team focused on deepening coverage of Latino communities in Sacramento, Modesto and Fresno. We launched a popular weekly newsletter called La Abeja and nurtured under-covered stories.

I led a team of nine reporters in Sacramento and in Washington, D.C. in covering politics andpolicy with journalists focused on accountability and on breaking down how government decisions affect Californians. Pitched and managed grant-funded projects in collaboration with ProPublica, SolutionsJournalism Network and James Irvine Foundation that supported new newsroom positions and brought attention to conditions in California jails, diversity in government and economic inequality.

Anchored The Bee's popular state worker coverage in the newspaper's Capitol Bureau. Kept tabs on unions, public pensions, government spending and the operations of dozens of state departments.

Tacoma, Wash.

Developed strong source relationships and employed public records to cover soldier suicides, the VA, military spending and notorious war crimes. Embedded with soldiers in southern Afghanistan in 2012. Won national and regional awards for military coverage, feature writing and enterprise reporting.

Washington D.C.

Covered violence and politics during three assignments for the McClatchy Baghdad Bureau. Traveled to Japan and Guam in 2015 to report on conflicts between the American military and its host communities.

Covered local governments as a reporter. Promoted to assistant city editor in 2009 and coordinated news coverage.
