• Media Relations: Served as spokesperson. Worked with the media and organizations to recast long standing public feelings about the agency. Wrote and edited press releases and speeches, and managed web content. Developed and ran executive and staff level media training sessions.• Social Media Development: Built campaigns using a variety of social media sites to promote the agency, increase license sales, and better communicate with customers. Analyzed the benefits and drawbacks of specific social media sites for the agency’s business interests. Provided social media training to communications staff. • Strategic Counsel: Provided counsel to the Cabinet Secretary and set agency policy during the Doyle Administration. Advised agency leadership on contentious internal and external issues, including staff cuts. Oversaw activities of 10 person staff, built communications structure and managed all communications.

• Strategic Planning/Message Development: Worked directly with the Governor and other executive staff to set strategies and develop major policies. Created messaging and long-range communication strategies for the Governor, Cabinet Secretaries and all 14 state agencies. Edited and wrote major policy speeches, including the 2010 State of the State Address.• Media Relations: Served as lead spokesman, worked on the record with all state media, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, TIME, Good Morning America, Today Show, Early Show, MSNBC, CNN and others. Provided regular briefings to the Governor and counseled on media strategies. • Issue Management/Coalition Development: Developed specific plans to move issues from a rollout, through the legislature, to a successful policy. For example, the $100 million Green to Gold revolving loan program to reduce energy costs for manufacturers. Managed communications for coalitions of major corporations, small businesses, unions, interest groups, and federal agencies. Led health care public relations and adapted highly technical concepts into a compelling narrative. Through these efforts, Wisconsin became the only state to expand coverage during the national health care debate.

• Client Relations: Managed a broad range of the agency’s major client accounts, including businesses, industry associations, and advocacy campaigns. Provided strategic counsel, media relations, crisis communications and new media services, among others. Developed and pitched customized client proposals. • Strategic Planning: Created and implemented communications plans and rebranded clients. Renamed and overhauled the public image of the Wisconsin Association for Justice, the state’s largest voluntary bar association. As a result, donations increased, membership grew, and laws were passed to their benefit.• Paid Media Campaigns: Created innovative radio, TV and direct mail campaigns for clients – planned, negotiated and placed media buys. Assembled public opinion polls and provided analysis.

• Created and implemented aggressive campaign plan that helped defeat the incumbent Attorney General. • Successfully developed strong messages to define opposition. Managed social media presence.• Served as sole campaign spokesperson, conducting numerous live TV and radio interviews.• Managed agency work on TV, radio, direct mail and phone campaigns.
