The system requires the integration of multiple software applications across different hardware components to process large streams of environmental data and maintain the security of epidemiological data while making information accessible to end users with low-bandwidth internet connections. After Adam started working at GSCE, he helped us to improve the design and efficiency of this system and took the lead in completely redesigning the web interface to make it more functional for our public health collaborators. In summary, I can attest that Adam’s intelligence, expertise, and dedication were essential in supporting our research program at GSCE. His efforts have had a positive impact on the work of students, staff, and faculty, as well as our many external collaborator. I'm not sure I can accurately convey in words both the breadth and depth of expertise Adam has brought to our team. The Land Science Research and Development group began in 2010 with only an idea, to perform value added processing to the existing Landsat archive. The resource budget was negligible and actual requirements were undefined. We were charged with developing a system that could process data at the rate and quality comparable to heritage Landsat systems, which have been under development for decades at a cost measured in millions of dollars. Adam "materialized" the initial hardware for us to prove our processing capabilities by leveraging institutional knowledge and relationships. He completely embraced Apache Hadoop and is the unequivocal expert from a systems perspective in an organization of over 500 employees. Once our project was initially proven and the hardware budget increased, this guy did ALL the sizing & performance analysis for the Hadoop cluster, which unsurprisingly were based on comprehensive, true, and measurable data points. He also handled procuring & installing the hardware and is solely responsible for its management today. The result is currently a 184 core Hadoop cluster with over 60 Terabytes storage that has twice the processing throughput of any other Landsat system in the building.... and this is set to expand by a factor of at least 5 within the next calendar year! The title of Principal Systems Administrator is a misnomer because in reality Adam is the Principal Systems Architect. He understands how virtually every system in the organization works and is constantly sought after to solve issues that baffle even our most experienced engineers. Hire him away at your peril...
