8Stem lets users pull a song apart, remix it, and share it. It's is a new format for the distribution and consumption of music that I have created along with the guidance and insight of my partner, Bruce Pavitt, the founder of Sub Pop records. 8Stem is a multi-channel audio playback application and remixing tool which gives listeners the ability to personalize songs to suit their taste and interact with their music. It’s proprietary platform allows artists, content owners, and record labels to maintain ownership while allowing new users to adopt its unique format.Our mission is to enable creativity throughout the music channel, from the original artists all the way to the listeners. By doing so, we aim to broaden musical horizons and enable new transactions with content that has been previously inaccessible without sophisticated tools.

What is TEDx? In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading”, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxOrcasIsland, where x = an independently organized TED event. At our TEDxOrcasIsland event, live speakers and video will combine to spark deep discussion and group connection. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

In 2001 an opportunity was presented to enter the hospitality industry through the assumption of a historic hotel on Orcas Island in Washington State. The property was in need of significant attention physically and operationally. It is a high profile historical landmark. As my wife and I were interested in starting a family, and there is no more ideal a location to raise a child, we jumped at the opportunity. We were both 23 years old. I assumed responsibility for a staff of 40 employees, 17,000 square feet of commercial space, and a chaotic organization that would require years of hard work to improve. In 2010 we were voted the "Best Hotel In Washington State" by viewers of Seattle's King 5 (NBC TV). I stepped aside as CEO in 2011 after 10 years of service.

Publicly traded company focused on the development of Home Automation Control Systems.One summer day in 1999 I found myself sitting in a house with five friends "talking tech". Within 5 months we had offices in six countries and 40 employees, had a very impressive trade show booth, and were courting a substantial investment from IBM. We made home automation look sexy.During the era of Enron and the "California Energy Crisis" it appeared that energy management within the home was going to be a huge business model with endless opportunity and growth. We offered a product that allowed users to control energy use within the home based on logical conditions from a single control mechanism that could be controlled via your phone or the web - before 2000!Our clients included the world's largest production home builders, which have a long period of due diligence when integrating new products into their inventory. With several slow sales quarters we were given the opportunity to trim every possible expense, release much of our plush (and unnecessary) office space, and found ourselves operating deep in the red. As fate would have it, our corporate officers arranged a $5m round of cash for stock scheduled to be signed on September 12, 2001, which was to be signed in Australia. The morning of September 12th in Australia was the late afternoon of September 11th in the USA. By the time the stock markets in Australia opened (which was where our stock was public) our stock had devalued considerably and our cash infusion opportunity had been revoked. I left my office with a degree of sadness and a whole lot of stock options that were never executed, but I learned a great deal and was thankful for the ride. I had a lot of fun in the process.
