I am an enthusiastic, experienced and accredited/chartered scientist with a focus on human performance within a sport, exercise, health and space context. I have a particular interest in the health and performance implications of a variety of training and monitoring techniques. In addition to working with English Premier League and Championship football teams, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, GB Gymnastics, GB Judo, and at major sporting events (London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 Ryder Cup) I have experience with medical patients, military personnel and astronauts from NASA, ESA and other agencies. I currently play a significant role in developing provision in higher education, leading staff, course validations and co-ordinating accreditation from industry leaders: BPS, REPs, CIMSPA and BASES. I my current role as Strategic Lead for Knowledge Exchange I am responsible for coordinating Solent University's engagement with a variety of stakeholders (SMEs, charities, public and professional bodies, local community groups etc), As a former Director (and Deputy Chair) of BASES, and a current member of the Professional Development Committee (High Performance Sport) for the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) I have vast experience of working with external organisations, and influencing policy and partnerships. Contributions to a Sport England project engaging inactive people in sport, and the Dundee Academy of Sport initiative promoting sport as a vehicle for education, have enhanced my research and project management skills. I pride myself on my ability to collate, communicate and disseminate information to a variety of audiences; presenting at national and international conferences and publishing in scientific and academic journals and acting as a STEM Ambassador. I'm also a reviewer, editor, and board member for respected peer-reviewed publications and have co-authored chapters in Routledge's Handbook of Sports Therapy, Injury Assessment and Rehabilitation. I regularly appear as a specialist commentator on radio, tv and digital media (BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky, National Geographic, Discovery Channel) and provided expert statements on Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) at the FIFA2018 World Cup.

As Course Leader I lead staff, co-ordinated and monitored the programme; achieving BASES Undergraduate Endorsment Scheme [BUES]) status. I was also heavily involved in the BSc(Hons) Physical Activity, Exercise and Health degree; contributing to Exercise in Specialist Populations and the course being endorsed by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). I also formulated and validated a new MSc Advanced Practice course, writing modules for physiotherapists, podiatrists and other allied health professionals (“Therapies for Musculoskeletal Disorders of Biomechanical Origin” and “Clinical Biomechanics and Tissue Stress”). I was responsible for the formation, co-ordination and operation of a new DXA (x-ray) facility (HealthScan) and for bringing in clients from Premier League and Championship Football Clubs, GB Judo and GB Gymnastics for regular health and peformance monitoring - also acting as the University's Radiation Protection Supervisor. As Chair of the Sports Performance Research Cluster, and Co-ordinator of Applied Research and Development within Sport and Physical Activity I was responsible for overseeing research activity and income generation projects. In addition to contracts with Birmingham City FC, I was also lead research proposer for a ~£700,000 project, partly funded by Sport England. to develop community-based sport ‘hubs’ promoting activity in the lowest participation groups (~£70,000 of this allocated directly to the university) and lead a successful ~£50,000 Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) grant establishing diagnostic radiography services. Other outreach work included running workshops at the science museum and the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), both on whole body vibration training, health and performance and a lecture at the Institute (now Royal Society) of Biology. -
