I am a 37 year old mechanical engineer with 15 years of experience primarily in the field of Internal Combustion engines. I'm very mechanically inclined and driven by a passion for cars, engines, and all things mechanical.While in school, I had a brief experience working for Toyota for a year where I served in both Chassis & Body engineering departments, learning Toyota's best-in-industry practices and getting my first taste of technical automotive projects, supporting the 2004 and 2007 Toyota Tundra vehicle programs.After graduating at University of Wisconsin-Madison, I have worked for Briggs & Stratton in Milwaukee, supporting various engine projects for the lawn & garden and utility industry. I have also completed a Master's degree in Engine Systems through Madison.I gained experience in the production support groups for both Large Engine Division and Small Engine Division, supporting nearly every major domestic engine platform within the Briggs & Stratton product portfolio. I managed numerous projects on an annual basis, foremost among them, emissions and compliance related.During my last 10 years in the B&S New Product Development group, I have taken lead responsibility for developing & implementing a number of new innovation products & features on our engines, including Automatic Choking systems (branded "ReadyStart"), Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) systems and dry sump lubrication systems (branded "OilGuard").I have recently joined Spike Brewing, a local manufacturer of homebrewing equipment, and am finding this a rapidly growing and fun industry to be a part of!I am a Mopar nut, and have been restoring a 1973 Dodge Charger for the past 15 years and have it up on blocks and torn down while addressing the body & rust issues. It's my labor of love that is looking like it will span from college to retirement. It was recently joined by its younger twin an '18 Challenger T/A, which is much more drive-able thankfully.

Product Engineer - New Product Development
Since joining the NPD group in 2011, I have served as lead engineer for a number of different engine product development projects. These programs have focused on our riding and commercial engine market segments. The first two programs that I led during my first few years in NPD were developing automatic choking systems branded ReadyStart(TM) for two key riding tractor platforms. These projects entail a number of new components and offer an excellent opportunity for creative solutions to add more functionality into an already tight engine package. Next up involved two programs focused on bringing a significant influx of technology and capability to our Vanguard engine product line for the commercial turf industry. These projects focused on implementing electronic fuel injection (EFI) on our 28 HP and 37 HP commercial V-twin platforms. This includes brand new fuel, ignition, induction & electrical systems and includes management of 120+ new components for the 28 HP engine built at Auburn, AL, and nearly that many for the 37 HP engine built in Japan. The lofty goals for this project include improvements in power, torque, load response, engine smoothness & fuel economy. These engines have been very well received in the commercial turf market where fuel economy is a sought after feature, considering these engines operate nearly 500 hours per year.In 2016-2017 I managed a major innovation project involving a redesign of the Vanguard commercial turf V-twins (Mid-Block & Big-Block). This involved completely redesigning the lubrication from wet sump to dry sump configuration, an industry first. Additionally, a brand new oil handling system, reservoir and filtration system was developed to be able to achieve an industry first 500 hour oil change interval (industry standard is 100 hours). This system, launched as OilGuard(TM) by Vanguard has already made an impact in the commercial turf industry & the unique nature of this feature has helped secure new placement.
Product Engineer - Small Engine Division
In this role, I took on more emissions projects, this time on engines with much larger volume scale (3 million+) and more at stake. I led a team that recalibrated every carburetor in the engine platform (over a dozen) and designed a modular catalyst muffler for exhaust emissions. Then, later on I managed & implemented a significant fuel tank program that involved design, material & process redevelopment and included managing over a $1.5M capital spend.Core Projects:1) Carburetor recalibrations for exhaust emissions2) Modular port-mounted catalyst muffler & accessories3) Evaporative emissions fuel tank for Phase III EPA compliance4) Long-life air cleaner systemThe Product:Air-cooled engines that are placed in lawn & garden walk-behind applications such as rotary push mowers, string trimmers and pressure washers. Displacement ranges from single cylinder 172 cc to 223 cc.
Product Engineer - Large Engine Division
This job was a lot about gas...I quickly came up to speed and led or participated in several emissions programs as part of the company's requirement to meet CARB Tier III and EPA Phase III evaporative and exhaust emissions regulatory limits. I also led several cost reduction projects that resulted in 7-figure annual savings for the company.
