About Adam Jerrett, Phd

My name is Dr Adam Jerrett. I've been teaching in Higher Education since 2012, teaching subjects like Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Game Design and Development to a variety of students in South Africa and the UK. I completed a Masters in Information Science (with a focus on educational game design/development) from the University of Pretoria in 2016, and a PhD in Creative Technologies (with a focus on developing games for change) in 2024.My research primarily focuses on how games can make us better people, and how that can help us make better games. I approach the creative process through an understanding of values-conscious game design, which suggests that we should be aware of our personal and societal values as creatives, as they inform the work we create. I love creative pervasive, real-world games, so I used that approach to create What We Take With Us (https://whatwetakewith.us/), a game focused on wellbeing. WWTWU manifested as a digital game (the website), an alternate reality game (played on a Discord server, with YouTube videos), and an escape-room inspired room-based game. Each of these three formats intertwined around a single narrative world - like transmedia storytelling, but for games. The game was also inherently personal in nature, charting my journey through the COVID-19 pandemic.I'm hoping to continue these strands in my research and teaching practice going forward: creating games to make the world a better place. If that's something you'd like to do, too, I'd love to hear from you.
