“…yes, but why?”I was always a tinkerer, somebody who wanted to know how things work and then find a way, ever so subtly, to improve them. I grew up in a home where both my parents owned their businesses. The family dinner table was my first business schooling. Topics of homework and sport intersected with product development, pricing elasticity, international supply and competition; for a child in 1970’s Ireland, that was very unusual schooling. “So, what’s the plan?”I love solving people’s strategic problems. Game development is complex. Timing and cost are always the factors people look to, but it’s deep-tissue questions that move the quality needle.As a child, I devoured fiction, mainly Science Fiction. The writer Isaac Asimov wrote about a concept called “Psychohistory”. That is an idea that, while one cannot foresee the actions of a particular individual, the laws of statistics as applied to large groups of people could predict the general flow of future events. This concept continues to fascinate me. Business is a series of intersecting decision points, and working to devise how each of those will play out is both rewarding and intriguing.“A leader gets the team he/she deserves.”I was given the above advice by one of the best people management leaders who hired me. You get out what you put in. I work with people inside and outside of my organization, solving challenges together. Those solutions need a team, and a team needs vision. I believe a leadership style must be genuine. I operate in an entirely transparent manner. Where I am strong, I lead; where I am weak, I surround myself with experts that I trust.Helping people stay focused on the problem assists the team in finding a better solution. At times, we know that the easy answer is not the best way. I’ve spent a long time coaching people to help them find the best answer. Anybody can do the easy thing; let us be better and do the right thing.I’m privileged to have an excellent international team of business development professionals who embrace a global view, have an idea of what tomorrow should look like and how we will get there.Outside of the day job, I play hockey for Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club, where I also coach. I am a husband of close to 20 years to a wonderful person, and I am a father to a “just starting the teenager years” son.What I commit to is done.
