Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting developments in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world's largest known copper and gold deposits. The project is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia's development. With the current development schedule, Turquoise Hill expects that Oyu Tolgoi will be the world’s third-largest copper producer at peak metal production in 2025.Situated in the southern Gobi desert of Mongolia, approximately 550 kilometres south of the capital, Ulaanbaatar and 80 kilometres north of the Mongolia-China border, Oyu Tolgoi is jointly owned by the Government of Mongolia (34 per cent) and Turquoise Hill Resources (66 per cent, of which Rio Tinto owns 51 per cent). Since 2010, Rio Tinto has also been the manager of the Oyu Tolgoi project.After decades of exploration and drilling, the first major discoveries at Oyu Tolgoi were made in 2001, leading to several years of further exploration which revealed the impressive scale of the deposit. While exploration continues, even with the reserves currently identified, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to operate for over 50 years.In May 2015, Oyu Tolgoi's shareholders, Rio Tinto, Turquoise Hill Resources, and the Government of Mongolia, agreed a plan to progress the next stage of underground development at Oyu Tolgoi.The following December a Project Financing agreement with 20 international banks and financial institutions to fund the development was signed. The US$4.4 billion unlocked by the agreement will allow the construction of more than 200 km of tunnels. Following final Board approvals, construction work began in 2016.While we currently produce all of our concentrate from the open pit, over 80 per cent of Oyu Tolgoi’s total value lies deep underground. We are currently developing an underground mine complex, using block-caving mining techniques to extract the ore and transport it to the surface to the concentrator.

Responsible for the management and delivery of all project control services, including development, implementation and support of all controls functions for a major projects across the Rio Tinto Iron Ore and Diamonds and Minerals product groups. Key accountability is the leadership and management of project controls personnel working across the capital projects to undertake the following activities:- Manage a group of professionals and junior managers. - Develop departmental plans, including business plans and organisational priorities. - Provide input and influence strategy for project cost control delivery across capital projects.- Develop and implement the project controls processes including all aspects of planning forecasting cost control and supporting functions.- Identify and implement improvement opportunities for streamlining project work process.- Apply governance and quality assurance across capital projects from a project cost reporting perspective.- Maintain relationships with key stakeholders to drive a culture of collaboration, participation andimprovement across projects.- Analysis and reporting of project construction and engineering progress to plan to provide a firm basis for strategic and operational decisions.- Manage and develop the performance of the team in line with Rio Tinto’s company values, in order to achieve objectives.- Contribute to the capital projects guidance and protocols which apply to the Rio Tinto's capital projects globally, including development of procedures, tools, templates and best practices to implement projects.

As leader of the Contracts & Procurement team, I am responsible for all commitments made and contracts awarded by Rio Tinto Iron Ore Expansion Projects, ensuring due process is followed, the projects’ needs are met; and the best commercial outcomes are reached for the long term benefit of Rio Tinto. Rio Tinto Iron Ore Expansion Projects is responsible for the capacity expansion undertaken by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. The projected capital outlay for the current suite of projects and studies is in excess of US$10 billion. Rio Tinto Iron Ore Expansion Projects work across the Pilbara, Simandou (West Africa) and Orissa (India).
