As with all retail jobs, the most important element is providing high-quality customer service. To achieve this, I utilised clear communication and positively engaged with customers as to build a strong rapport. Customers are always the number one priority, however, each person has their own preferences. Hence, I had to use my intuition to decide whether to offer friendly assistance or be more hands-off, if that was how they preferred to shop.Alternatively, I developed knowledge of the features of stock. Education in the workplace is key, and using training resources for self-improvement was crucial for my role. For example, if a customer needed a shoe with support from Asics I needed the depth of understanding to offer guidance. Furthermore, I needed to be able to convey my knowledge in a digestible way. This meant highlighting different aspects of the product depending on the customer's knowledge level, and even adjusting my language.Other than assisting customers, I had to work as part of a team to maintain day-to-day store operations. My duties included adjusting stock, completing administrative tasks, and collaborating with our other local store. This, combined with the fast-paced environment typical of retail, challenged me as a worker.

The primary responsibility of a specimen collector is to effectively conduct swabs. To do this, I communicated with patients in a clear and friendly manner, taking into consideration that they were in an uncomfortable situation. Patients were usually unwell and under stress from being in an overstimulating medical environment. I undertook the PCR swabs, which utilised specific techniques taught in a two-day training course. The tests required both nasal and throat swabs; however, they were not always straightforward. I had to use my judgement as to how to adjust my procedure based on the patient. For example, if they had a strong gag reflex, I would alter my technique. Another situation that required problem-solving and communication skills was when interacting with babies and kids. Making it a comfortable experience was crucial and required advanced interpersonal skills.Alternatively, a different aspect of the role was correctly abiding by infection control guidelines. This involved strict protocol with personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitisation, and management of equipment. Meanwhile, I grew my skills as a team member as I had to follow instructions from senior staff. These co-workers were registered nurses and had far greater expertise in the field. I also had to provide general customer service to patients, providing them with Rapid Antigen Tests where necessary. Answering queries regarding the current public health response was also common, meaning I had to stay up-to-date with the latest COVID-19 news.
