Throughout my career as a marine biologist specialising in seahorse research, I have been exposed to countless experiences with critical illnesses such as cancer, stroke, kidney conditions, etc. with close ones and seahorses were consumed as part of traditional medicine to serve as a cure to the ailments. So often, once a dread illness strikes, all their goals and dreams disappears and turned into a fight for survival. As a conservationist at heart, this drove me to take up the opportunity to raise awareness and reach out to as many people as possible on the importance of CIF. 7months after taking up the opportunity with RISE, I was promoted to Business Director.I love connecting & understanding with my prospects and clients and I got great joy from helping them solve their gaps in planning and particularly difficulties with insurance coverage if they have any pre-existing conditions. This is where my research experience comes in to identify, analyse, and understand their condition prior to negotiating (where possible) using facts and figures. In taking this approach, I was awarded the Manulife Every Day Better Maker Award 2020 Champion for Malaysia which is an award for exceptional service. Unfortunately, I did not manage to spot any seahorse during my 1st and 2nd volunteer experience. On an early trip out to sea for my 3rd attempt, I spotted my 1st pair of seahorses, waltzing away among the seagrass in courtship. It is then I became curious about how seahorses communicate with one another. This curiosity led me to take up an undergraduate research project on the matter with my late mentor and chairperson of the group, Choo Chee Kuang. Under his tutelage, I explored more about seahorses and the plight they are currently in. I discovered that seahorses do make sounds then. Even in graduation, my curiosity grew and I soon pursue my research on the same subject to a PhD level. This is when I discovered that they not only do produce sound but each species and individual produced a specific pattern unique to themselves. My mentor passed on from nasopharyngeal cancer in the middle of 2013. With the blessing from his family, I soon took over the organisation to carry on the great work and further seahorse research and conservation in the country. This is where I discovered my passion to tell the story about seahorses to kids, adults and all stakeholders. 13 years since I first volunteered with the group back in 2017, my passion and love for all things seahorses only grew over time. Together with my team and collaborators (Universities, Corporate Bodies, NGOs & Foundations), we have expanded our research focus beyond Johor to the other parts of Malaysia.
