In this university-wide role within the Learning Technologies Division of IU's IT organization, I play a major part in Indiana University's response to generative AI, serving as a thought leader across campuses. I create resources about the opportunities and challenges that generative AI presents for higher education. My responsibilities include developing professional development resources for faculty and students on the effective and ethical use of GenAI, conducting workshops and presentations to faculty groups across the university, and leading the GenAI Learning Lab. This lab focuses on facilitating innovative teaching strategies and assisting faculty in integrating GenAI into the curriculum to enhance learning outcomes and prepare students for the future of work.

Leveraging my dual role within IU's IT organization but maintaining rank as a tenured full professor, I bring an academically grounded, tech-savvy perspective to the evolution of online education. I thrive on fostering meaningful changes in online learning, staying true to my roots as an educator while embracing the transformative power of digital technologies.

I bring a faculty perspective to the division of IU's IT organization that supports faculty in their use of educational technology. I help IU faculty in designing, developing, and promoting more innovative ways to teach, especially using digital tools and especially in online courses. I'm charged with helping connect faculty with peer institutions, educational technology vendors/solutions, and others who support innovative teaching and learning. I am the co-founder and co-director of the Digital Gardener Initiative, a university-wide digital literacy program, and I co-led the redesign of Teaching.IU, a university-wide repository for peer-reviewed faculty teaching stories and resources about the use of educational technology.

I teach in the Journalism, Media, and Strategic Communication Program at Indiana University Southeast. My teaching focuses on digital journalism, multimedia storytelling, and communications law. I research issues relating to news literacy.

Duties included recruiting and supervising adjunct instructors, managing program assessment, and developing and overseeing recruiting effort. During time as program coordinator, I helped create a fundraising account/initiative for the Journalism & Media Program, created a Journalism & Media Program alumni reunion, and created a process for funding, procuring, and maintaining equipment for student use. I also oversaw an external review, which helped lead to additional resources for the Journalism & Media Program, including the development of an Internet radio station.

Directed student media operations for Horizon Media, including The Horizon student news organization and Horizon Radio. Since I’ve started advising, students on The Horizon or The Horizon staff collectively have won more than 250 awards from various regional, state, and national organizations. Most notably, The Horizon has been the recipient of two Newspaper Pacemaker Awards from the Associated Collegiate Press (considered to be the Pulitzer Prize of college journalism), one in 2015 and another in 2018. In January 2018, I built and launched Horizon Radio, an Internet radio station. Additionally, I oversaw business operations, seeing annual advertising revenue more than quadruple from 2012 to 2019.

Assisted research projects, including working extensively on professional research in collaboration with the Reynolds Journalism Institute. Taught undergraduate and graduate courses, including Principles of American Journalism, Graduate Proseminar for the High School Adviser (mass communication theory class for high school teachers enrolled in an online master's program), newswriting, and an audience analysis class.

Helped develop and coordinate workshops and events for high school journalism students and teachers, including a summer workshop and annual events that brought thousands of visitors to Ball State's campus. Assisted in promotion and marketing of the Department of Journalism and its programs. Taught undergraduate courses in journalistic writing and editing.
