W3C Xquery Working Group

W3C

I was invited to join the XQuery Working Group because of my open source contributions to eXist-db, and my concern that open source project communities were not represented with the working group.I felt that many of the representatives of the working group were from large commercial organisations, and that Open Source projects and interests also needed to be represented. As such, as not only helping to advance XQuery, but also as trying to balance the requirements of the commercial implementers with those of community driven open source projects.

I was responsible for the overall technical design and delivery of the DRI (Digital Repository Infrastructure) project. DRI is the next generation Digital Archive for UK Government, designed to preserve and make accessible all born-digital and digitised records from Government and specialist Non-Governmental Organisations inline with the remit of The National Archives. The technical design of DRI included: the design of a custom datacenter, specification of a high-performance networking infrastructure and storage network, development of custom software and continuous software deployment. I was responsible for both the systems and software architecture and integration and enjoyed also rolling up my sleeves most days to both write code and setup servers. I encouraged my teams on a path of Continuous Improvement and instigated agile project management practices and encouraged peer reviews. The Systems, Datacenter and Network technologies included: Cisco, NetApp, StorageTek, Solaris, Oracle, RHEL 6 and Puppet. The Bespoke Software Development technologies included: Scala, Akka, Spray.io, Angular.js, Jena Fuseki, Hadoop, Java 7, Tomcat, ActiveMQ, Spring, Hibernate, SDB, Python, C++, Git, SVN, Jenkins, Puppet and Nexus.
