About Adam Shepherd

Proposed and was awarded an NIH grant to design an innovative solution to support people with dementia by assisting them with daily activities and reporting to caregivers. The solution provides daily support to the user and insight to the caregivers by collecting user activity data from IoT devices in order to provide reporting to the caregivers. A POC was created under this grant and tested in partnership with the University of Georgia. The project demonstrated the feasibility of this type of solution to help this population. As the primary architect, orchestrated the solution by leading a team of architects and developers to create solution artifacts for the AWS platform. Artifacts included design documentation for infrastructure, network, security, software, and IoT. Upon design completion, led the implementation by selecting and managing the development team to deliver the solution using an iterative testing process with dementia patients and their caregivers. The application uses AWS serverless technologies including the following AWS tools: Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, Cognito, RDS, and IoT gateway which provides scalability of the application to a global audience. NodeJS and Python were used as the core programming languages for Lambda functions on both the edge and the cloud. The user interface utilizes ReactJS on AWS S3 and is web and mobile compliant. The user-centric UI design was iteratively tested with dementia patients and their caregivers by the University of Georgia in order to optimize the user experience for this population. The application was integrated with multiple IoT devices to collect data on user activity. Types of data included motion, temperature, and video. Data was sent to a continuously functional local hub in the residence that processed and stored the data locally using Lambda and DynamoDB. If internet connectivity is lost, once connectivity is re-established with the cloud, interim data is sent by the hub device using the IoT gateway and the API Gateway. This data was stored in a DynamoDB database and Lambda functions were used to process the data in preparation for further analytics. Docker containers are used on the hubs to ensure consistent configuration and setup of the hub device. Created a caregiver portal for reports derived from the user activities collected from the IoT data.

  • Ups Supply Chain Solutions
    Application Develoment Manager/Architect
Ups Supply Chain Solutions Jan 2019 - Aug 2019
    Alpharetta, Ga, Us
Assigned to lead a mission-critical project for UPS that was behind schedule and experiencing technical issues. This application for UPS Freight Forwarding operations provides pricing to a global audience and is integrated with several internal applications and databases. Bringing this pricing solution online was a high priority for UPS because it would allow for near-real-time pricing for large and complex proposals. As the Solutions Architect and the Application Development Manager for the project, was tasked to resolve the technical issues and to provide a deliverable project timeline for upper management. As the Application Development Manager, led a team of 23 off-shore .Net developers to review and assess the application design and performance. Also simultaneously led a team of on-shore business analysts, project managers, and administrative staff to review requirements in detail in order to be able to provide a realistic timeline for delivery. After working to isolate application technical issues the application performance improved from over 5 minutes to load to under 3 milliseconds. This was achieved by focusing on the design and functionality of the application to identify bottlenecks and to resolve them systematically until the application met the performance requirements. Comprehensive testing was implemented to ensure that no further performance issues would be introduced. Set up an agile application development process that helped the product owners to be aware of any issues in real-time of the status of the project. Communicated to the executive staff the new timeline and managed the reporting of the progress of the application on a weekly basis. The application utilized the Azure platform and a microservices application designed to service a diverse global audience. Brought Microsoft Azure architects on board to work with the contracting company to improve the performance of the application as there were some gaps in capabilities.
  • Cprime, Inc
    Solutions Architect
    Cprime, Inc Jan 2018 - Jan 2019
    San Mateo, California, Us
Worked on multiple projects for various companies that included AthenaHealth, Twitter, Lockheed Martin, and MIB. Assisted with a variety of issues related to Atlassian processes, Solutions Architecture, DevOps, Portfolio management, Training, JIra, Confluence and Bitbucket installations and configurations. One assignment was to assist with an initiative for a company to transition them from a waterfall project management model to a new Agile project management style. The company had used waterfall management for over 50 years with little to no experience internally of how to manage projects using Agile. They had competitive pressure to provide faster updates to their product line to stay competitive. The company needed expert assistance to make the transition because they had increasing business challenges that required much faster response times to customer needs. As part of this new initiative, set up Jira and Confluence server instances, and trained management and staff on how to use Agile processes with JIRA and Confluence. Documented their current business waterfall business processes and designed JIRA projects and Confluence spaces to incorporate business models into the new Agile project management process for faster assimilation. As part of that process, worked with management, PMO, Development, QA, and Operations teams to detail current business processes. This dramatically reduced transition time from the old waterfall process by incorporating core business processes into the new Agile Atlassian workflow. This allowed for updates to their portfolio of products to transition from the big bang model of multi-year updates to monthly updates that were prioritized and released on a regular basis.
