As Kik’s first Android hire in 2 years I was able to provide fresh ideas to an established team. Kik gave me the opportunity to work on an existing application over 15 million monthly active users. Working on an application of this size provided a whole new set of challenges compared to my previous roles, and was a great position to grow both my development and leadership skills.- Core contributor on an app with over 15 million monthly active users- Refactoring and feature work in 7 years of legacy Android code- Introduced RxJava and drove adoption of reactive programming paradigms- Countless internal changes to improve the quality and testability of the app, including asynchronous database access, immutable data, observable repository patterns, and MVVM architecture- Interviewed, trained, and mentored co-ops and junior developers- Some of the major features I worked on include a full Material redesign of the app, user bios and ‘emoji status’, and chat list persistence across logins

Engineering Lead

Kitchener, Canada Area

At Bridgit I led the engineering team building the ‘Closeout’ deficiency management tool. This is an iOS and Android application aimed at construction project managers, foremen and subcontractors. In addition to the management responsibilities of this role, I was the lead mobile developer for both Android and iOS platforms.- Built an offline-first mobile application from the ground up on both Android and iOS- Utilized libraries such as Dagger, RxJava, Retrofit and Mockito on Android, and RestKit, Alamofire and RxSwift on iOS- Made heavy use of built-in database solutions on corresponding platforms — SQLite (wrapped with ORMLite) on Android and CoreData on iOS- Built out a test suite for both platforms (Mockito, Dagger, RxJava, XCTest, OHHTTPStubs)- Recruitment and on-going management of a team of developers- Client and internal stakeholder interaction to educate on designs and product requirements- Introduced structure to the development process; requirements documents, unit testing, continuous integrationMy experiences with Bridgit were broad — being a startup, I had to fill many roles. I was developer, designer, project manager, team lead and more. The application itself, while simple in concept, had a lot of industry specific challenges that made my two years here both challenging and rewarding.

Vista supplies cinema software to thousands of cinemas around the world - everything you could possibly need to run a cinema, including session management, point-of-sale, in-cinema advertising, call center controls and more. I've spent my time at Vista working primarily on the iOS and Android ticketing app. This app is unique in that it can be branded and modified to suit a given cinema chain’s needs. This application was originally designed & developed by a third party company, to a very limited set of specifications; I was brought on board to drive the transition of this app from an external product to an internal one.Bringing the application ‘in-house’ required me to rewrite a significant amount of the application to improve the stability and maintainability of the app, remedy existing bugs, as well as add multiple new features, both on Android and iOS. Following these improvements, I architected and developed an entirely new Android application to fit the new design. The resulting app follows modern mobile UI conventions and is designed to be far more extensible and flexible than the old design enabled. The architecture of the new app pushes the boundaries of what is possible with Android fragments, with fragments nested multiple levels deep, providing easy re-use across pages and across tablet and phone layouts. Other technologies used in the app include the new official Navigation Drawer, the Otto EventBus from Square, and the ORMLite object relational mapping library.Other tasks I've been involved with include:- Updating & fixing the iOS applications- Maintaining build configurations for customers- Updating the backend WCF services when new features are required

Software Developer

Auckland, New Zealand

Pingar is a New Zealand based startup that sells a multi-language natural language processing (NLP) API. This API is capable of extracting useful metadata from unstructured text. Things like names, locations, organisations and keywords from documents such as letters, emails and marketing material. It is offered as both a cloud-based and on-premise solution.Being a startup, I was involved in every area of the development lifecycle. I designed the architecture of the code base, implemented the design, wrote the documentation, and supported the software. When I arrived, the API was an ASMX service, with hard coded “support” for only two languages. I contributed significantly to the architecture of the WCF service that replaced this. The new product is far more extensible and maintainable, now capable of handling any language with only minor additions in the form of language-specific processing classes. I also ensured that the service supported both SOAP and RESTful/JSON access.During my time with Pingar I was also responsible for the following: - Built an internal WPF application for quickly testing documents against the API and viewing the results- Maintained the Java and C# SDKs- Maintained the support documentation (using the popular Sandcastle tool)- Worked with the research team in creating an automated taxonomy generation tool in Java (using tools such as Solr document store and Sesame triple store)- Supported and assisted customers in API usage queries- Implemented a multi-threaded processing solution which resulted in a 50% speed increase in certain API features- Wrote technical blog posts and release notesFurther to the above, I was responsible for modifying an open-source Wikipedia processing library to generate pre-processed data files to support all language options. This ran on Apache Hadoop; I made modifications to run on the Amazon Elastic MapReduce Hadoop product, as well as including Unicode support.

Summer Research Intern

Auckland, New Zealand

For this 10-week summer internship through the Center for Software Innovation at the University of Auckland, I researched multiple "electronic forms" technologies. The goal was to establish which piece of software could produce standardised forms across all University departments, meeting their varying individual needs. This research included such technologies as Oracle BPM, RightNow CRM, Sharepoint, Google Forms and Microsoft Word. I evaluated the technologies based on how they were already in use within the university, how they met the criteria of different departments, and their ability to integrate into existing systems. This involved working not only with other researchers, but with the individuals already using these products - each of whom had a vested interest in "selling" their existing solution.
