About Adam S.
My life thesis: execution > strategy. Compounding FTW. I'm an optimistic skeptic. I enjoy pattern matching and read widely.Founder and CEO @levy. We are a founder's back-office (HR, finance, compliance, equity) operations team. Back-office operations are a tax on success. No founder should pay this. Your time, focus and superpower is what differentiates you and creates success. You focus on product and customers. Levy does the rest. Host of the Entrepreneurial Excellence podcast. I dive deep with multi time founders about what are the key decisions, actions, hires, and more that they've used to achieve "excellence." General Partner at the Autopilot Fund. We invest in early stage startups. We love obsessed founders who have a history of breaking through walls. I have invested in over 200 startups. 14 are unicorns (8 from seed). In previous lives, I founded 3.5 other companies, been a product leader on an API team, Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), and do-it-all janitor. I enjoy building great teams, processes, and stories that unify a company around a shared mission. Helping others build successful businesses brings me joy and, I believe, improves the world. People describe me as energetic, positive, creative, and optimistic. I enjoy rational, logical, data driven debate built on mutual trust and respect. I'm not an engineer but people view me as "technical" and have built companies with the brightest PhDs and brilliant engineers.Honesty, trust, fun, a sense of urgency and mission are what I look for in colleagues and places I work. Passion about my product, my company and my team is what drives me. I work hard and enjoy being surrounded by people who do the same. I love to read. "Leave the world (and your business) better than when you arrived...""The greatest risk is not taking one!"Always curious and learning. Your company will move faster with you focusing on your superpowers, not on back-office operations.levy takes on your human resources (HR), finance, and compliance work. Your business will run smoothly while you focus on scale. We save our clients an average of 500 hours and ~$70k a year.

CurrentThe Autopilot Fund focuses on early-stage companies that serve and accelerate how companies operate. More about us: https://autopilot.fund/Operations span various “departments”: could be in engineering, operations, sales, finance, product, customer success… the questions we ask ourselves are:1. Is this a founding team so capable that others should be afraid to go against them?2. Do they understand the problem better than anyone, and have special “founder-market” fit?3. Will they rest until they have dragged the world kicking & screaming into their vision of the future?4. Is the product “infrastructure” in a manner of speaking: structured data, deeply embedded, sticky?5. Does the advent of AI exponentially increase or decrease their defensibility? Our portfolio includes some pretty special companies like AngelList, Pulley, Puzzle, Levels, Disco, among others. Smart founders focus. Bad founders distract themselves with all the small, non-product, non-customer work that can easily take up hours but not move your startup forward. We are sector agnostic and focus mostly on early stage. Our thesis is simple: the best founders come from anywhere, with any background, working in any industry. Focus, joy, dogged determination, and deep knowledge about your product and how you're changing the world is what leads to success. If you're interested in learning more, drop me a note on LinkedIn.

CurrentAngel Investor in ~200 startups. 14 unicorns, 8 of which I invested at seed. My preferred focus is on SaaS Enterprise businesses although fantastic, focused founders solving problems aligned with personal theses are always worth meeting. I invest largely at the earliest stages. I prefer to invest directly but also participate in syndicates. I'm still trying to comprehend how some of my failures have gone from the top of the heap to bankruptcy (I have thoughts). #startupinvesting #learning

AbstractOps abstracts away business operations so founders and executives can focus on what matters most: product and sales. We are the OS for the back-office.CEOs and founding teams waste hundreds of hours every year context switching into operational tasks - finance, legal, HR, hiring, and sales ops. These tasks are generally one-off, require a lot of research and education on new tools. At AbstractOps, we think there is a better way. Imagine a single dashboard tying together, automating, and proactively managing your entire back-office so that you can focus on what you do best: building a rocketship company. Businesses that focus win. Founders that distract themselves lose.Sign up on our waitlist at AbstractOps.com or join our operations community (https://www.abstractops.com/ao-community) if you just want to start learning a bit more/get some basic startup operations help. Datalogue’s AI powered pipelines automatically prepare any data from any source or any format, for immediate, compliant use. Time to data is a critical measurement for any business success - how long it takes you to measure and optimize your data is the difference between success and failure. Go from weeks or months to minutes to process and prepare any of your data sources for analysis. We make ETL and data prep a back of the mind problem by using machine learning. Sales and marketing (go-to-market) focus although it's critical to work hand-in-hand with engineering and product to make sure that Datalogue fit the needs of our customers leading to high conversion and low churn. Grew revenue 700x (from a low base ;) in under a year with expectations of 10x growth in 2019. Led Datalogue to become part of Jensen Huang's (CEO of Nvidia) keynote at GTC 2019. Represented Datalogue at both RedHerring North America and Red Herring Global - winner both times.

[Acquired by Maven] LiftIgniter is the personalization API. We algorithmically personalize your website or app using machine learning. Personalization leads to more engaged, sticky, and high value users. YCombinator w14 and raised seed and series A from a fantastic list of top tier investors (total of $8.4m). I oversaw the business and product side of the company. For the first 2 years, it was me plus 5 amazing engineers. We grew the business from $0 in revenue, $0 in marketing, 0 customers, 0 case studies to profitability, billions of data points, negative mrr churn, and a successful series A fundraise with top VC firms. As a member of the Board and leadership team, I worked on long-term strategy, quarterly and yearly goal-setting, and senior employment decisions. Culture was and always is a part of my focus, as well. On a daily basis, my focus was on hiring and managing a high velocity sales, customer success, BD, and marketing team. Our goal was high performance at the top of the funnel all the way to close and renewal.Small fun story from these years: A very famous hedge fund manager flew my co-founder and I from SF to CT on his private jet for a full day of meetings with him and his team. He then put us on his helicopter to JFK and a first class flight home.

Senior Manager, Business Development & Channel Sales
Symantec acquired Clearwell Systems for $400 million.During the acquisition, I was tasked with helping to lead the transition and integration for business development and sales. In this role, I work directly with my counterparts at Symantec to efficiently and transparently integrate Clearwell's Channel into the Symantec system while minimizing all disruptions to the business. The acquisition also exposed Clearwell's technology to Symantec's VARs, which produce a majority of Symantec's ~$6.5B in revenues. Those VARs required training, new contracts, and a sales support to successfully integrate Clearwell into their offerings. I managed a select list of the top Symantec VARs and 50+ litigation support & law firm relationships in all the major cities West of the Mississippi.Other roles & responsibilities include:- Manage the partner and law firm relationships West of the Mississippi. Work includes sales, support, training, and identification and prioritization of old and new partners.- Pricing strategy, market analysis- Deal negotiation - Interface with direct and indirect sales team on deals vis-a-vis the Channel- Align channel & VAR marketing strategy to fit product roadmap and increase customer usage and sales- Work closely with marketing team on the creation and roll-out of collateral- Present at events, roadshows.- And, of course, a lot of travel! :)
Manager, Business Development & Channel Sales
Clearwell was a leading provider of machine intelligent e-discovery software. Clearwell sold product via two methods: direct to the Enterprise or via the Channel. The Channel represented nearly 50% of revenue despite having a far small team. I managed Clearwell's Channel Partners for the United States (focusing on the West as the team continued to grow). The work included interfacing with all of our partners, VARs, and law firms in my territory, selling our product to and with them, signing up and identifying new partners, training, roadmap/technical understanding, and strategic initiatives to increase revenue, margins, and success vis-a-vis the competition. The Channel team worked closely with our sales and engineering groups as they are critical to our success given the large territory and partners with very different needs and abilities. Understanding the technology, competition, and city/state level market dynamics is required for top performance.
Sr. Analyst + Project Manager
Project manage all aspects of Neustar's $200 million plus NPAC/Number portability Re-bid project. This project was the most important strategic focus as it represented, at the time, a majority of the companies revenue and nearly all of its profit. Tools used:- Microsoft Project- Microsoft Visio* Polaris Award winner - "most prestigious employee honor recognized by Neustar"* Chairman's Award winner - "for recognized excellence above and beyond my peers"
Head Of Corporate Social Responsibility
I founded and ran the Corporate Social Responsibility program at Neustar. The focus of the program was to reduce our environmental impact in a business-positive manner. I received executive sign-off and budget to create the new group, which touched all parts of the organization: - HR: empowering greater employee involvement in company affairs via working group led by me. The group included people from all parts of the organization (and titles) who had rarely interacted in the past. I also created the first CSA-delivery program in the company's history. - Physical footprint: reduction in facility waste from the datacenter/NOC down to paper, printing, and lighting. Included detailed work with our landlord, architects, and consultants. - Sales: growing RFP sustainability requirement, which the program enabled us to answer in a positive light- Marketing: to customers, potential new hires, and others interested in our impact on the local environment In the course of ten months from when the program started, Neustar was recognized as an environmental leader by the Northern Virginia Tech Council and Loudon County.
Analyst, Corporate Development
I was a member of the Corporate Development team working on mergers and acquisitions for Neustar - a $500M revenue publicly traded corporation. I worked on everything from small ($1M) to large ($200M +) deals, and strategy. The role included detailed financial analysis, heavy due diligence/data room management, integration planning, earnout management, and strategic market analysis.Heavy focus on Excel modeling, market analysis, and target interaction.
Strategy (Wimax); Legal
I split my work between legal work in the General Counsel's office and with the WiMax strategy & rollout team. - Internet & mobile privacy- Mobile social networking including early location check-in- The "Internet of Things" before it was cool- e911- Next-generation WiMax (4G) technology strategic rollout including pricing analysis, customer segmentation, and initial marketing. We thought WiMax would be the next big thing. It was not but working on next generation technology and thinking about the possibilities of the future bit me hard. I have yet to shake that enjoyment.
