The Informatics Lab sit at the intersection of new technology, applied data science, and design. We are tasked with finding new ways to make data useful. I am currently involved with developing the Met Office Data Science Strategy, and my experience in Machine Learning coupled with scientific research / software engineering skills allows me to advise and support technologists and scientists to apply it to solve challenges in the Weather and Climate domain.In my career to date I have worked as a Scientific Software Engineer in various domains such as Digital Map Production, GIS and Weather and Climate model development. I have also worked in academia, gaining a PhD in Computational Neuroscience, and subsequently as a postdoctoral researcher in the area of Cognitive Robotics.

I am working in the LFRic team, part of Science IT at the Met Office.The LFRic project is undertaking a major redesign and redevelopment of the Met Office Weather and Climate modelling infrastructure to make it more modular and more importantly, scalable to future High Performance Computing architectures. My particular areas of research and development include parallel I/O and visualisation and I am also applying my research skills in AI and Machine Learning to weather and climate data analysis. I also maintain links with academia as a Visiting Research Associate with Plymouth University and continue my personal research in bio-inspired Neural Networks (see additional profile below).

My PhD and postdoc Research was in the area of Computational Neuroscience and bio-inspired computing, in particular using spiking neural networks to model the development of the mammalian vision system with applications to autonomous systems.Currently I'm also looking at other Neural Network techniques such as Convolutional networks and LSTMs with a view to linking my research with my work at the Met Office and applying Machine Learning to Climate and Weather data.My publications are on my ResearchGate pagewww.researchgate.net/profile/Samantha_Adams2

PhD thesis title was "The Development of Bio-Inspired Cortical Feature Maps for Robot SensoriMotor Controllers" and involved research into applying techniques from Computational Neuroscience to Robotics....i.e. creating brains for robots!

This was my most recent role at the Met Office during this period and job duties included: • Support and development of the Met Office Unified Model (UM) software.• Management of a team of 3 technical staff delivering two major software releases of the Unified Model.• Technical coordinator for next generation Climate model HadGEM3.• Porting and optimisation of key climate models to new IBM supercomputer.I held a few previous roles and these include: • Software Developer for Forecast Model verification systems.• Research and development into the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques for automatic text generation for forecasts (Fortran 90, C and Prolog programming).• Software Development for the generation and presentation of Climate Statistics (GIS, Visual Basic, Java and Database programming). This role also included software project management and technical management of contract developers.

Initially trained as a Cartographer, worked mainly on production of Digital Geographic products and mapping. Transferred to IT section after a couple of years and thereafter worked on software development for digital products and mapping
