VFILES is the hippest and foulest-mouthed fashion and culture social media site.My responsibilities and achievements include:• Organizing the move from using a third party development team and building the in-house engineering team.• Planning and directing the transition from a monolithic Rails application to a system of independent services, predominantly written in Haskell, serving and supporting an increasingly mature front-end.• Achieving zero-downtime rolling deployments.• Data modeling and data retrieval optimization.• Quartering the average page load time and reducing average server response time by 90%, all whilst seeing traffic double and achieving a net decrease in server infrastructure.• Overseeing the integration of VFILES' externally hosted eShop into our core product.• Creating a self-monitoring system to dynamically scale services based on chronic usage patterns and acute conditions such as high load or peer failure.• Working with the product, design, and editorial teams to develop new features and determine product direction.• Handling special initiatives as assigned by the CEO, such as assisting with engineering-adjacent hires and developing processes, practices, and technical infrastructure for the eCommerce staff.

• Created from the ground up a warehouse management system to replace a legacy system.• Designed, created, and implemented a new location-based tracking system which also integrated with legacy status system.• Ruby/Sinatra backend for routing and data management using DataMapper. At Aegis I designed and coded Java applications - front and back-end - that simulate and execute trades on the New York Stock Exchange.My achievements include:• Updated and expanded the functionality of real-time Java software which trades on the NYSE.• Used JDBC and Postgres for persistence, as well as XML.• Wrote error-resistant code to parse FIX and ICE streams.• Redesigned and completely overhauled setup and administration suite to control incoming feeds and outgoing orders.

Carnegie Learning makes math software for schools based on cognitive research done at Carnegie Mellon University.My responsibilities included:• Redesigned and coded GUIs for the Teachers Toolkit part of Carnegie Learning's educational software.• Refactored legacy code.• Integrated 3rd party proprietary and open-source packages into Carnegie Learning's software.• Designed and built custom Swing components.• Ensured quality of GUI design across Windows and Mac platforms.• Performed JUnit testing, fully documented code.• Wrote XSLT templates to transform XML data into informative and attractive reports.
