Art DirectorShatterbox / Branding & New Media Design Firm Aug 2016 - Aug 2018Lexington, Kentucky, UsI've worked with craft gin distillers and breweries, a coffee roaster, higher education institutions, video game designers and publishers, an investigative research firm, contractors, an international design-build firm, a public school system, a fine dining and event caterer, a national flower grower, as well as social causes and non-profit organizations.Regardless of the industry, each challenge has provided a unique opportunity to identify problems and craft beautiful and impactful solutions. That's led to numerous gold and silver ADDY Awards at the local and regional level, Judge's Choice honors, and a recognition for best copywriting and best design, as well as an award for Public Service Excellence in design. Most importantly, it's meant bringing value to clients through design. -
Lead DesignerTransylvania University Dec 2014 - Jul 2016Lexington, Kentucky, UsA new administration was ushering in a fresh and aspirational vision for Transylvania University, the 16th oldest college in America. Working with Stamats, the nation's leading higher education marketing agency, we developed new brand messaging that reflected Transy's contemporary identity. I was tasked with translating that message into a visual system that resonated not only with current and prospective students, but long time college friends, staff, and alumni.Brand defenders are never fiercer than they are when you change their college's visual identity. You're not only shaping the future, you're breaking from their past. Remarkably, the new look and feel was met with overwhelmingly positive reception. In addition to creating a new visual identity for the college, I designed all of the inauguration materials for the incoming president, built a suite of admissions publications and marketing collateral, redesigned the alumni magazine, and collaborated with a team of designers and developers to launch a new university website. -
Assistant Director Of Communications For AdmissionCentre College Jul 2011 - Nov 2014Danville, Ky, UsIf you want to test your mettle as a marketer, try convincing 18-year-olds to do anything. Now consider that "anything," in this scenario, is spending thousands of dollars on an undergraduate education in Danville, Kentucky. Centre College may be a U.S. News and World Report Top-50 liberal arts institution, but so are 49 other schools in the nation.I served as graphic designer, social media strategist, and content producer for the admission office. That's a lot to manage, but the objective was always the same—surprise and delight with authenticity.I designed invitations, signage, postcards, tshirts, websites, and slide decks and Prezi presentations using a visual language that appealed to our target demographic without compromising the integrity of the institution. Working with the Office of Communications, I ensured that primary admission publications stayed on message and incorporated feedback that counselors received from students during interviews and travel.Social media, still a bit of a wild west, was a top priority for me. I established best practices for all of the College's social media channels through the development of a cross-campus committee. In addition, I managed our student blogger program, which (at the time) was unconventional in its embrace of honest, unedited content. As a content producer, I designed and authored the Centre Admissions blog as well as developed several short films for the College; one of which was picked up by national media for its frank take on the college application process. -
Digital Recruitment SpecialistCentre College Jul 2009 - Jun 2011Danville, Ky, UsIn 2009, colleges were scrambling to figure out how they could leverage social media in the admissions process. Could a small liberal arts school that guaranteed "personal education" make good on that promise to high school students in the admission funnel?I started with a simple philosophy: don't chase the platform, chase the conversation. That meant working with students as a traditional admission counselor in addition to monitoring our social media channels. I spent time on the college fair circuit, reading applications, and contributing to decision committee meetings. Everything I learned there informed my approach to how Centre interacted with students online. My work culminated in an ebook for high school students that outlined best practice for engaging with colleges on mainstream social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter as well as niche platforms designed for college recruitment. The book led to speaking engagements at local and regional admission conferences and laid the groundwork for other colleges to develop their own approach to digital recruitment. -
Communications FellowCentre College Aug 2007 - Jun 2009Danville, Ky, UsI thought I wanted to work in the theatre. In fact, I spent 4 years and over a hundred thousand dollars on an education to do just that. Then, a few weeks before graduation, I changed my mind. I wanted to take everything I had learned about people and storytelling and go into advertising, design, and marketing. If not for this entry level position at my alma mater, you very well may have found me waiting tables between theatre gigs.I spent my fellowship designing billboards and posters, writing news articles, producing video content, and photographing campus. But my biggest contribution was establishing the college's social media presence. In 2007, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter were all less than five years old. No one knew what impact these platforms would have, but I recognized then that the College needed to embrace them quickly.
