After working at several top tier universities as a research scientist (PhD Organic Chemistry), I made the transition to the world of IT some years ago via a post-graduate Computer Science studies. Since then I have successfully applied the rigour and discipline of my former career to the role of Business Analyst / Architect / Developer in the context of the Australian Telco industry.Much of my experience has been in service delivery, operational support and billing systems for start-ups up to mid sized enterprises; I have analysed, designed, documented, (and in many cases built) systems supporting the sales process (including integrations to CRM systems), provisioning network and Telco services on local and/or 3rd party infrastructure, network usage data collection, and complex billing of Telco and other services.I have developed an interest in data and how to exploit it using appropriate database technologies - from the 'fast data' streaming in from all the devices on a global network (Cassandra), to 'big data' relating to spatial data sets (~7 TB PostGIS). I have solved network problems using graph databases (Neo4J), and analysed and visualised time-series data (TimescaleDB, Jupyter, D3). The coolest thing I've done recently is to apply machine learning to score sales leads with ~85% accuracy. The fun thing I am working on right now is lighting up GIS capability in the context of fixed wireless and related spatial solutions.I am a cofounder of a legal tech law firm specialising in trade marks and offering a SAAS platform to manage intellectual property.Solution Architecture - Software Development - Business Analysis - Documentation - Telco Industry - Spatial Systems - Billing Systems - Mobile

Rust DeveloperSwoop Jan 2023 - PresentBrisbane, Queensland, AustraliaI work with with large (7TB) spatial datasets and need to crunch a lot of data to deliver GIS solutions to the business.Async Rust enables me to leverage all the resources on the server and implement useful algorithms (R-tree, minimum spanning tree etc) in a reasonable time. The upshot is a suite of sophisticated visual tools for spatial problems - calculating 3D line of sight from tower to rooftop, viewsheds, Fresnel zones etc. -
Software ArchitectSwoop Jan 2021 - PresentAustraliaSwoop was born from the consolidation and acquisition of several regional Australian Telcos. My role has been to research, prototype and build unified systems to support the integration of the various entities. My architectural preference is for 'monolith where possible with microservices as appropriate' making use of a message bus for flexibility of gluing the parts together. In building systems for Swoop I have made use of some awesome Open Source tools: ° Camunda - headless workflow engine ° RabbitMQ - messaging ° PostGIS - first class spatial database ° SigNoz - observability platform with logs, traces and metrics ° Typesense - instant search ° Spicedb - Zanzibar-inspired authorisation frameworkWe have had good success using Go, but I am loving Rust! -
Programmer-ArcheologistSwoop Jan 2021 - PresentBrisbane, Queensland, AustraliaThis (kinda joking) job title is taken from Vernor Vinge's 'A Deepness in the Sky', and it involves understanding legacy systems with a view to integration, migration and sometimes eventual decommissioning. -

Vp DevelopmentTriology Sep 2012 - Jul 2013Brisbane, AustraliaIn this role, my team built a suite of inter-related productivity applications delivered via mobile and web.We created a custom back end (BaaS) that delivers a common REST API to all clients - iOS, Android, and Web.
