  The purpose of this reflection is to detail my experiences and growth during my internship with the NSF REU program at Portland State University. This internship focused on computational modeling to serve urban development and public engagement, providing me with hands-on experience in applying engineering skills to real-world problems.During my internship, I led the development of the web front-end portion of the project aimed at making trail data accessible and interactive. Specific tasks included:Utilizing the Folium Python library to create interactive web maps of Forest Park trails.Implementing color-coding for trails based on their status and last hiked dates to aid easy identification of trail conditions.Integrating images within markers to enhance user experience and provide visual context for reported hazards.Successfully embedding the interactive web map onto a project website, contributing to public access to trail conditions.Throughout the internship, I developed proficiency in using Python libraries for web mapping, gaining an enhanced understanding of user interface design and public data accessibility. I also strengthened my ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, which was crucial for the completion of the project. These experiences collectively reinforced my technical expertise and problem-solving skills, while also improving my capacity to communicate complex technical information to a broader audience.Overall, my internship with the NSF REU program was a highly valuable experience. It provided me with practical skills in computational modeling and web development. The key takeaways include the importance of data accuracy, the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, and the impact of making scientific information accessible to the public. This experience has prepared me to tackle complex problems and contribute meaningfully to community-focused projects.
