He creates large-scale artworks, cultural strategies, multi-sensory experiences and audio-visual performances using cutting-edge technologies developed through diverse collaboration. Showcased across moving image, installation, live events and volcanoes, his work has featured on the Discovery Channel, BBC, New Scientist, The Guardian, VICE & the New York Times. He is the creative director at of Immersive Networks Collective, an arts-research company and at the University of Leeds, He is a Cultural Fellow in Art and Science and Artist in Residence at the Centre for Immersive Technologies & UNRESP (vumo.cloud). The volcanic emissions are termed vumo.UNRESP is working on Masaya volcano in Nicaragua, one of the biggest volcanic polluters in the world. Very little is known about the dispersion and levels of the air pollution caused by the vumo, and there no established procedures for communicating the vumo hazard between the local authorities and the public.UNRESP seeks to develop public advisories for events during which air pollution caused by vumo reaches hazardous levels, through a collaboration between environmental sciences, social sciences, arts & humanities, and public health.The role of the artist initially explored techniques to communicate the plume prediction model designed by the UNRESP team to multiple audiences, including the local population of El Panama, a village based at the foot of the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua. Using a 3D printed model of the Masaya volcano and surrounding area, we utilised projection mapped videos of the volcanic plume’s location over google earth images. Through experiential storytelling techniques, we connected El Panama’s location, with the date, time to communicate the location of the plume and meaningful impacts on the population and agriculture.As the research develops, the role of the artist has evolved into co-designing cultural strategies; techniques and methodologies for meaningful, mass engagement and dissemination. Working alongside co-investigators and others collaborators from the artistic and creative communities to develop novel funding strategies.
