    In May 2015, was a co-instructor for the 2-week May Term course in Paris. During this time, helped to coordinate students pre-departure, en route, and on the ground in Paris, providing them with access to cell phones and museum and metro passes, as well as basic French and a sense of the city’s geography. Accompanied them to sites further afield such as Versailles and La Villette and was the sole chaperone for the return journey from Paris to Cedar Rapids.During May Term, was also responsible for holding class meetings on the course topic (Paris as a Living History) with the five francophone students present and grading their participation, as well as their final presentations and journals.In the fall of 2015, taught Elementary French I and an upper-level course on French humor, which included a mixture of materials from medieval to modern times ranging from texts by Rabelais and Molière to films (Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, Ridicule, Le Dîner de cons) to contemporary stand-up comics and satirical weeklies like Charlie Hebdo. The course integrated discussion and biweekly journaling with performance-based immersion activities and a final research paper. In the spring of 2016, taught Elementary French II and a modified version of the French and Francophone cinema course taught in the fall of 2012 at Coe.Helped to coordinate French conversation table and film screenings.

    Was in charge of contacting and working with 8 published writers (in English, Arabic, and Kurdish) and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to publicize Lanterns of Hope: A Poetry Project for Iraqi Youth—a project aiming to solicit and publish an anthology of poems by youth in Iraq ages 16 to 23, in English, Arabic, and Kurdish.Via videoconferencing calls and email, coordinated initial publicity efforts: generation and translation of texts, design of poster and logo, outreach to IWP connections in Iraq and abroad who might be able to help advertise the projectCo-managed the Facebook page, as well as Submittable and a Lanterns of Hope email account created for the purpose of collecting submissions.Gathered mentor feedback on the poems read and organized several videoconference calls with mentors and colleagues at the Embassy to make a final selection.Drafted and oversaw translation of text congratulating the chosen poets and urging them to consider their personal security situations before sending in final biographies.Corresponded personally with five young Iraqi poets writing in English and aided them in editing their poems. Coordinated with the mentors so that they could do the same for our other poets.Located translators, oversaw translation of poems, introduction, and bios before compiling the final manuscript.Located a book designer and worked with her to create a final e-Book and print anthology before finally coordinating with a local press to print hard copies.Coordinated with the IWP and the Embassy for publicity of the project in its final stages and to raise awareness for the e-Book.

    Taught translation seminars for upper-level students in the creative writing track of the English department. Courses included readings in translation theory and readings, viewings, and listening sessions that developed an understanding of translation as an intermedia, intergenre discipline able to enrich the creative original work of all writers, even those who don’t speak a second language. Works studied include the likes of Edward Hopper’s paintings, Anne Carson’s poetry, John Logan’s play Red, and the film Fantasia.Students were each given the opportunity to workshop their creative work, and they were also given a number of creative exercises to do, as well as two craft papers that allowed them to absorb and integrate the theoretical readings they did. The final project was a portfolio that included their revised work from the semester and also discussed their revision process.Outside of class, responsible for helping to organize various activities (readings, film screenings, etc.) in the undergraduate creative writing community.
