Profile bio

About Adeel Arshad

I am a Research Fellow in the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) at the University of Exeter Penryn Campus to work on the EPSRC project. I have been employing state-of-the-art ab-initio DFT and MD simulations for the design and fabrication of "Transparent Smart Composite Materials for Glazing Applications". Prior to joining the ESI, Dr Adeel Arshad was a Research Fellow at the Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering, Northumbria University, UK, and Aston University, UK in Mechanical, Biomedical, and Design Engineering. He did Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham, UK on novel nanocomposite phase change materials (NCPCMs) for thermal management (TM) and thermal Energy storage (TES) technologies. He was a member of the Fluids and Thermal Engineering (FLUTE) research group. He did the MSc in Mechanical Engineering major in Thermal-Fluids from the University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, Pakistan securing a Gold Medal. In his MSc research, he has worked on passive thermal management of portable electronic devices using various PCMs, including pin-fin and plate-fin heat sinks. He earned BSc in Mechanical Engineering from COMSATS University Islamabad, Pakistan, and was awarded the Campus and Institute Gold Medals. My Ph.D. dissertation focused on synthetic chemistry skills to synthesize the novel nanocomposite PCMs (NcPCMs), including developing and characterizing with different nanoparticles and with different characterization techniques, developing complex CFD simulations (using ANSYS-FLUENT and COMSOL Multiphysics) in multiphase heat transfer situations, and developing the design and prototype of a micro coated finned and porous NcPCMs-based heat sink cooling system. I have addressed the cooling challenges of medium-to-high heat flux electronic devices by integrating the air, nanofluids, and NcPCMs with micro pin-fin and porous heat sinks as active and passive cooling solutions. My research experience also covers the designing and computational analysis of a thermal energy storage (TES) system based on designing of novel constructal design triple-tube heat exchanger to address the problem of building heating/cooling challenges. He is also ranked in the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University, USA in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. He has also been nominated for The Scopus Early Career Researcher UK Award 2020 by Elsevier.

As a lecturer, I took on the task to develop a series of courses, running through year 1 to year 3 of the 4-year Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree program. I developed an incremental curriculum building students' knowledge on sustainability from the ground up. I followed the methods such as providing course handouts, slides, animated videos, direct interaction, experimental learning, and class discussion to achieve my goals of efficient teaching. The course I developed, delivered, and assessed with fantastic feedback were:• Thermodynamics-I (3 CH)• Fluid Mechanics- II (3 CH)• Heat and Mass Transfer (3 CH)Along with that, I also co-supervised one group (4-students) Final-Year Bachelor's thesis where we designed and conducted a study of phase change materials-based pin-fin heat sink of various configurations based on extensive experimentation. The co-supervision yielded a successful publication as follows:1. Ashraf, M.J., Ali, H.M., Usman, H. and Arshad, A., (2017). "Experimental passive electronics cooling: Parametric investigation of pin-fin geometries and efficient phase change materials. “International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer 115, Part B: 251-263.
